Health Department Roundup: Swagger, Kenny & Ziggy's, AKA Sushi and More

No one in the forest has swagger like Puck, swagger like Puck, swagger like Puck
Swagger (3839 Southwest Fwy.) is a strange case. Some Yelp reviewers characterize the lounge as "hood," but it's located in Greenway, far from anything else fitting that description. (And it's good enough for Isiah Carey). The bar's name suggests something fresh and fashionable, but Shakespeare actually coined the word more than 400 years ago. Someone portraying a mischievous sprite was the first to speak it onstage, which is probably one you should keep filed away in your "cool facts" folder if you're trying to get laid at Swagger.

Swagger did receive a presumably less sprite-like visitor last week: a city health inspector. The inspector found four violations: Ice machine not set up in a way that prevents contamination; toilet room not provided with at least one covered waste receptacle; effective pest-control measures not utilized; and openings to the outdoors not protected against the entrance of pests. No citation was issued.

AKA Sushi House (2390 W. Alabama) fared worse: An inspector issued a citation after finding seven violations last week. Issues included no freezing records retained for at least 90 days for raw-consumption fish; potentially hazardous workings supply of food not marked with a disposal time; poorly designed or maintained equipment; dirty floors; and poisonous/toxic materials not stored below food/equipment/utensils in order to prevent contamination.

The Smashburger at 5381 Westheimer also got hit with a ticket, in this case for four violations: equipment components not kept adjusted to manufacturer's specifications; equipment/food-contact surfaces/utensils not clean to sight and touch; dirty floors; and no Food Service Manager's certification.

Kenny and Ziggy's (2327 Post Oak) had more violations at seven, but did not receive a citation. Issues included employee consuming food in unapproved area; food stored in unclean or uncovered containers; dirty wall/ceiling; sink not provided with hot enough water; and poorly designed or maintained equipment.

The Concert Pub (5636 Richmond), where years ago we watched a set by the best (only) Steely Dan cover band we've ever seen, earned four violations but no citation after an inspector found shellstock stored improperly or with no ID tags ("Rikki Don't Lose that Shellstock Tag"); ice intended for human consumption used for cooling; equipment/food-contact surfaces/utensils not clean to sight and touch; and dirty vent filters.

Finally, Frank's Grill -- the one at 5901 Clinton near Denver Harbor, not the Telephone Road location -- got hit with four violations. An inspector found poorly designed or maintained equipment; openings to the outdoors not protected against the entrance of pests; food-contact surfaces of equipment/utensils not immersed in chlorine solution or hot water for at least ten seconds; and potentially hazardous food held at improper temperatures.

I think Aka Sushi and Miyako are serving 'fake fish' as Chris Kenjo mentions in the chef interview.

Frozen. Then thawed. Then served.
