And We Still Got the Shaft: Self-Righteous Tipper Gets Waitress Fired After Being Outed on the Internet

Applebees_560x373.jpg
See you tomorrow...that is if I still have a job.
Any healthy adult will tell you that the proper response to being called out on a self-admitted mistake is to have the dignity and wherewithal to own the mistake and work toward improvement in the future. That sounds like a lot of work, though, and apparently Pastor Alois Bell thought so, too.

Pastor Bell, of St. Louis, Missouri, decided to spend her recent Friday evening, January 25, dining with members of her congregation -- a party of ten -- at a local Applebee's franchise. After what we assume was a hearty meal -- or "Eatin' Good in the Neighborhood," as it is known in certain circles -- the party received their check, which was then split among the group as requested.

Here is where the fun begins. The checks contained -- per restaurant policy -- a mandatory 18 percent gratuity incurred for parties over eight people. No big deal; it's a policy we may not all agree with, but one that is typically found written in plain sight at most restaurants with this practice. This did not sit well with Pastor Bell, who quickly sprang into action. It should be noted that by "action," we mean "heretofore unseen levels of passive-aggressive bullshit and childishness."

Rather than explain, we'll just show you:

Applebeesreciept_560x404.jpg
Cheapness is next to Godliness.
Yup, she stiffed a teenager at a fast casual restaurant out of six dollars in the name of God. Seemingly not feeling fully justified in her actions, Bell was sure to add her title to the check as well -- we can't just have laypeople skating on checks all willy-nilly -- lest anyone question her piety.

Now if this were where our story ended, there wouldn't be much to talk about. Sadly, it would be just another night at thousands of restaurants across the country. Stories of unusual, outlandish and invisible tips are commonplace, as any server will tell you.

A friend who now works at a fine dining restaurant in Houston reports that her favorite stiffing came while she worked at TGIFridays at the hands of a man who returned his improperly cooked steak and received a replacement. He passed on tipping on the $200+ tab, noting: "Your job is not hard, do it right." While the basic concept of the kitchen and waitstaff's separate job descriptions seems to have escaped the gentlemen in our example, plenty of cheapskates don't even bother justifying their behavior.

Alas, our story soldiers on, because apparently people who don't like to tip would rather keep that information between themselves, the server they are screwing over and God.

Unfortunately for Bell, a server at the Applebee's took a photo of the offending receipt and posted it to the popular social news site Reddit, where it began to spread quickly across the interwebs. It should be noted that Reddit, like many other corners of the Internet, is not known for taking injustices, no matter how big -- or in this case small -- lying down. Resourceful amateur detectives quickly sleuthed out Bell's identity along with information about her church and before long, news reached Bell that she and her "tip" had gone viral.

When contacted by media, Bell claimed "a lapse in judgment." As she told The Smoking Gun in an interview, "My heart is really broken," adding: "I've brought embarrassment to my church and ministry." Well, that sounds downright remorseful. Good on you, Ms. Bell. We all do stupid stuff now and again. Forgive and forget, we say.

Oh, wait. Pastor Bell left out the part where neither her lapse in judgment nor her broken heart prevented her from calling the restaurant and demanding every single person involved be fired. Remorse works in mysterious ways.

As of writing, the server who posted the receipt to Reddit -- Chelsea Welch, who is interviewed by Consumerist here -- has in fact been fired. Next time, Chelsea, be sure to block out names and signatures if you want to keep your job. Or don't; the $3.50 an hour is worth far less than the Internet comedy gold you supplied.

As for Pastor Bell, the contact Web site for her 15-member strip-mall ministry has been inoperable since early Thursday and we imagine she has probably received quite a few prank pizza deliveries by now, courtesy of the Internet. Hope you weren't looking for a tip, Domino's delivery dude!

Pastor Bell is just one more example of bad Christians pretending to be good. But there are good Christians offering good things. http://x.co/t5kO

She is shameful and a disgrace to the title "pastor". Whether or not you agree with automatic gratuity, there is absolutely no reason to belittle the hardworking waitstaff.

What happened to "you will reap what you sow" she should have tipped her 100% and the Pastor would have got it back. I am a Christian and also a small business owner for over 30 years, but I am here to tell you Police Officers, Orientals, Indians "the dot type" and Christians are the tightest people I have ever did business with in my life, I try to avoid them.

All these comments about a female pastor being a dick. Really? A woman a dick? I think there is a more appropriate, female counterpart of the anotomy, to call this type of woman!

Posting the signature was unethical, not undeserved. Jesus said, "give unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's and ounto God what is God's." In the Bible God specifically requires 10% of those who follow him. Most restaurants have a standard policy of automatic gratuity for larger groups. If the pastor does not want to give the required gratuity, they have the choice not to eat at that restaurant.

I'm a waiter and no matter what I would never post anything like that... It's a breach on several levels... Some people are dicks, put your big girl panties on and deal with it... Some people tip less than others... I'd have fired her if I found out it was someone working for me...

She gets a teen fired for being a jerk. What a joke.

The pastor was wrong on every level and should be outed for it. 10% to God? God has no need for your money. It's your place of worship that you give you 10% too not God. Rightfully so. God bless you for doing so but mocking an individual trying to make a living is ridiculous! 18% is standard restaurant policy for large groups not the individual server. If she had a problem with it she should have spoken to the manager and not have taken it out on her server. Same on her!

No, but that "pastor" should be fired.

Y'all seriously need to do your research. She didn't post it. Her waitress friend took a picture of it and posted it. First they fired the waitress in question. Then they fire the one who posted it.

Yes and No. Yes, because no matter how rude a customer is to you, you don't out them on the interwebs. But in the end, No, because these firms lack the foresight to include this type of policy in their training. They will waste 4 pages describing where not to smoke out back by the dumpster.

Crap like this is why I left the church. She doesn't "give God ten percent" she gives her church 10%. Jesus called bullshit on the Pharisees for claiming that giving to the Temple was holier than simply being a decent human being and doing good by others. This pastor is like so many Christians. I grew up in churches full of people who thought exactly like this. As a server for over 20 years I used to wait people like this, who thought tipping 5% and leaving a stupid tract was going to get them into heaven or impress me enough to join their church. This is a big reason, this attitude, is why I don't attend church anymore. Self righteous assholes shepherding other self righteous assholes. Yeah, I think I'll pass.

Embarrassment is what he gets for being a dick. Give the waitress her job back. She deserved a tip.

What an A**! I see others feel the same. He's a self rightous Jerk who probably voted for Obama which also makes him stupid and which also makes him a sheeple=not a real person. He needs to lose his job, see how that feels A**hole!

Except, posting it on the internet is not wrong. People should conduct themselves in a manner which they would not be embarrased or upset if everyone on earth saw. At least when you are in public. There is no confidentiallity agreement on a reciept.

Is the Pastor really a Pastor or is it one of those made up backyard churches with a self titled pastor? Either way, nice going person of faith for giving everyone who has beliefs a bad rap.

The waitress didnt post the receipt and wasnt fired. Another waitress at the restaurant took a picture of the receipt and posted it. She was fired because this violated the company policy.

Honestly, I hope Anonymous decides to make an example of that horrible "pastor" and hack her personal information and release it to the public, like they did with WBC.

Anthony Rathbun

Sadly, I think so yes, but only because of the signature inclusion. The pastor is a total ass, and what they did is wrong. I, as a manager would have let the employee go, but I would refer them eagerly or set them up elsewhere provided they were worth doing so in the first place. The pastor would not be allowed back on my premises due to my intolerance that any of my staff be treated so disrespectfully.

Autumn Smith

Not only does the pastor act like a total cunt in the first place, but then gets the waitress fired for exposing her...yeah, 'cause taking revenge is SUCH a Christian value. What an evil bitch.

Its against the law to post someone's signature online, so to avoid a lawsuit, she had to be fired. Sad, but it is what it is.

No way! He put on there that he was a pastor and treated her badly. The fruit of God's will is love and living in peace with everyone (not just other christians). She was right to expose him for what he truely is outside of church. I had a similar experience with a pastor who called the corporate office of the restaurant I worked at and LIED telling them I cussed him out. He was angry because I would not give him his meal tax free without filling in a tax exempt form! I didn't get fired because luckily God takes care of innocent people & my manager believed me (he knew that I never cuss). The corp gave hime 10 free meals. I happened to be there when he came for one of them and he told me to watch out that liars can hurt me. I told him I didn't get hurt because God knows the truth. What disgusting people!

For posting the receipt itself, maybe. Depends on the company's policy and whether or not she was given a copy. For pointing out the hypocrisy in this "pastor's" action, hell no. The "lack of judgment" excuse doesn't work. If she just forgot to tip, maybe, but crossing out the company's published gratuity and making that comment were deliberate. Then she tried to get everyone involved fired because she knew no one would believe her. Pathetic.

Joe Pinney
Joe Pinney

Entire books could be written (and I would bet a few will; definitely some articles in Christian magazines) as to what this pastor simply does not grasp when it comes to not just the practice of her faith, but also her position as a representative of that faith. Apparently tips WERE given, but in cash, not via credit card, thus making the little note entirely unnecessary and superfluous. The waitress was guilty of just one thing - not blocking out the name and number of the restaurant on the photo of the receipt. Had she done that, it's highly unlikely she would have been fired (a decision no doubt prompted by the lawyers, who are paranoid by nature). So both women made mistakes. Should she have gotten fired? No. Disciplined but not fired. But should the customer have written that little note in the first place? No to that as well.

Keith Blackketter
Keith Blackketter

no she did not deserve to get fired, she didnt do anything wrong, or in violation of company policy from what I can find.

Yes it was a crappy thing for the pastor to do. But, it was a breach of privacy. Employees that breach privacy generally do have to pay the consequences.

@Karey Martin Bennett Wow! The Bible contains a passage about tithing in specific terms like 10%. And the Bible is God's word, huh?

@Ryan Cope You're half correct.  Chelsea was not the actual server who waited on Ms. Bell's party -- this story never implied she was -- but rather she was the employee who posted the receipt.  As of this story's posting, according to Chelsea Welch and Applebee's, Chelsea was the only server let go as a result.
