When Embedding Social Media Into Your Web Site Goes Bad

Oops.
Everyone wants to embed live Twitter streams into their stuff these days. You see the streams scrolling across the bottom of your TV screen during live presentations and you see them broadcast with a projector at events. And you see them quite frequently on websites, for restaurants or otherwise.

What developers and business owners alike fail to consider, however, is the frequency with which people misuse and abuse Twitter. Llamas can sign up for a Twitter account, and that means their inane or nasty Tweets can easily show up in a live Twitter feed if you're not paying attention.

That means that someone's Tweet about -- for example -- Mellow Mushroom's Tuscaloosa location not quite living up to expectations will be the first thing that greets visitors to Mellow Mushroom's Web site.

Much better now.
Worse, it was one of the first things that came up when I ran a Google search for Mellow Mushroom this past Sunday afternoon. And worse still, that Tweet was still there a day later. I'm pretty sure that "Your Tuscaloosa location sucks dick" isn't the first thing that Mellow Mushroom wants guests to see (or imagine) when they search for the restaurant on Google or land on the restaurant's homepage.

This is why -- even though it seems silly in its sheer newness -- the role of a social media manager is so important for restaurants who want to engage in the big, messy web of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and more. If you have a Twitter stream, restaurants, monitor it responsibly, for God's sake.

This has been your weekly PSA from Eating...Our Words, who does not happen to think that any of the Mellow Mushroom locations suck dick.
