Cheaper by the Dozen: The Top 10 Oyster Deals in Houston

Happy hour prices on oysters are available Monday through Thursday at Pappadeaux.
With oyster season in full swing, many of our readers have asked where to get great oyster deals around town. After all, the chief allure of Gulf oysters aside from their plump sweetness is the low cost. (God, we are so tremendously spoiled down here.)

I called around to some of my favorite oyster-shucking spots in Houston and found 10 great oysters-by-the-dozen deals that run the gamut from happy hour pricing to everyday steals. Even better, these spots are scattered all over town (check out the map below), so there's a platter of half-shells waiting out there for everybody.

Here they are, listed in order of most expensive to least:

Just FYI. Danton's oysters are $6.50/dozen on Mondays (only in the Oyster BAr) from 4-8PM.

Cheers!

La Fisheria serves up some interesting variations, kinda of Mexican twist on our big Gulf buddies

I like the oysters at Pappadeaux and Pappas, but the customers are all like 70-90 years old. I keep thinking of jello and such....I'm going to try Danton's next

I checked Papadeaux on Richmond last night and they went up to $9.95 a dozen.

What a great article, Katharine.  Speaking as a 32-year New Orleanian, I am often asked where a person can find suitable oysters at suitable prices.  This article is well written and chocked full of useful info.  Kudos!

Kenny had the Capt. Benny's recently and said they were extra tasty that time around!

Are you lumping in Pappas Seafood House with Pappadeaux? I know at the Shepherd location they're $5.95/dozen Monday through Thursday and not limited to the bar.

My boyfriend and I recently ate three dozen together... as an appetizer. Bet we could do more, particularly when they're so affordable!

@CarlRosa  I really like the Kumamoto oysters at Michiru....hard to get but worth the wait. Have you slurped those yet Carl-san?

@burgerlandorgy I think the limited time pricing of $5.95/dozen for oysters is valid at all Pappas Seafood House locations. Having visited the locations near Gulfgate and Friendswood, both were offering oysters at that price.

@Matthew  The biggest oysters I've eaten in Houston came from the aquarium at Fung's and were cold-water oysters from Washington state. They were the size of a small kitten and had to be lightly steamed to keep them whole, then dappledd with a few black beans and something like a ponzu sauce.

I have not.  Not yet.  I planned to visit Michiru for an official sushi review this past week and then contracted a nasty head cold.  So Michiru (and all other eateries) were put off for a week or so.  But first, I need to sample their sushi.  Then, I'll return for the Kumamoto oysters.  Thanks for the reminder, though!  :)

Sounds great.  First, the sushi review....then, slurping and shucking.  :)

@CarlRosa

I've heard great things about Michiru...I'm headed there this week. Maybe we can hook up and slurp together
