The Rest of the Best: Houston's Top 10 Fried Chicken

Categories: Top 10

Better than KFC: Haven's chicken is even available for curbside pick-up.
4. Haven

Chef Randy Evans's buttermilk-fried chicken is quickly becoming the stuff of Houston legend, and with good reason. It's crispy and savory without being too greasy -- this ain't a ten-piece bucket from KFC. (The herb-roasted version is no sad second: It's just as moist and flavorful, albeit with a little less guilt.) And because this is Haven we're talking about, the chicken is both free-range and organic, which means that all of the calories are rendered moot. (Right? Isn't that how this works?)

3. Al Aseel

There's more than just the famed "Palestinian chicken" to be found at Al Aseel. Asked former Houston Press food critic Robb Walsh on his blog after a recent meal there: "Did you know that the best fried chicken in Houston is served at a mom and pop Middle Eastern restaurant on Richmond called Al Aseel Grill & Cafe, 'The Taste of Bethlehem?'" We had a pretty good idea after tasting the standard grilled chicken here; the fried chicken with a za'atar-enhanced batter is -- amazingly -- a step up even from mouthwatering Palestinian chicken.

2. Frenchy's

"Don't complain about the long lines -- the fact that there are always people standing in line at Frenchy's guarantees that every piece of chicken you get has just come out of the fryer," wrote Robb Walsh when he listed Frenchy's chicken as his No. 12 favorite dish in Houston. "Since 1969, Frenchy Creuzot has been consistently supplying the best Creole fried chicken in Houston. He has also been turning out the tastiest greens, the most satisfying andouille-studded red beans and rice and some of the best dirty rice and jambalaya the city has ever known -- all sold in Styrofoam "to go" containers for a veritable pittance." The original Frenchy's location on Scott Street is still the best -- and it's still open until 3 a.m. on the weekends.

Agree with your mom.... home is choice #1. Randy Evans is a trusted alternate choice; I suggest stopping into Cove, the new raw bar nook in Haven which opens at 4pm, having a nibble and drink, and then ordering some chicken take-away.

mmm...the best fried chicken for my money is the Seabrook Classic Cafe on Nasa Rd 1. Knocks me out!

And for the record, Chief makes the best huge burger and some great barbeque. All portions are extremely outsized and everything is very fresh. The place looks like a total dump but it is hard to find better food of this type served by such a nice group of people.  Mostly take out since there are only two small tables and four stools at the counter.

The best wings and tenders can be found at Chief's Cajun Snack Shack at the southwest corner of Live Oak and Southmore in the Third Ward. They come with about a pound of crisp, hot fries.

I believe that the Rice Box truck currently does not have the Golden Doomba on the menu. He says he is reworking the recipe.

I have to say the best Fried Chicken in town BY FAR, is the old secret Astrodome Recipe fried chicken that is served down in the Star Boxes (Drayton's Old Boxes) buffet at MM Park before Astros games.

The chicken is worth the $300-plus ticket all by itself.  If you haven't heard about the Astrodome Secret Recipe Fried Chicken, then you should ask somebody.

Sorry, ordering fried chicken in a restaurant is a waste of my limited dining out dollars. Best cook it at home.

Randall's fried chicken is best out of a cooler on a boat during a hot day of fishing.

Remember the fried chicken Killen's had at the fried chicken throwdown? We serve it everyday!

Don't forget Frenchy's seasoned french fries!

The best fried chicken I had was from Krogers, 2 days after Hurricane Ike shut the town down.  Krogers was open, air conditioned and frying chicken.  We bought enough for the neighborhood.  Perspective is everything. Yum!

@kshilcutt Other than DQ?  I'm thinking Ouisie's and Natachee's off the top of my head.  Problem is I haven't had a mind-blowing CFS since I was a kid, and I'd like to relive that experience.
