Health Department Roundup: 59 Diner, Taco Milagro, Catty Corner and More

All of our future wives and girlfriends should note that Jeff is on our "free-pass" list. Also, sorry for all the stuff we haven't done yet.
Right now we feel like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park. We could have told everyone this disaster was going to happen. Maybe not as quickly and drastically as it did, but with so many butterflies flapping their wings in Peking, plus what we witnessed when we worked there in college, it was inevitable. 59 Diner (3801 Farnham) got a ticket.

An inspector found 11 problems during a resinspection Friday, including food not protected from potential contamination; food stored in contact with water or undrained ice; potentially hazardous food not properly thawed as part of the cooking process (corrected on site); poorly designed or maintained equipment; equipment/food-contact surfaces/utensils not clean to sight and touch; equipment/glassware/utensils/plates not handled in a way that prevents contamination; floor not maintained in good condition; and potentially hazardous food not stored at proper temperatures.

Happier days: Catty Corner Ice House (895 Wakefield) had a perfect inspection last week, as it deserves. Wakefield used to be a honky-tonk hotspot; a young Willie Nelson wrote a few songs when (unsuccessfully) trying to gain some musical traction up and down the near-northside road. Catty Corner, which forms a trifecta of Real Shit with The Dutchman and Red's Country Place, actually goes back to the 1940s, according to our resident dive expert John Lomax. Baby-faced Willie could have played "Crazy" there decades ago. Writing it up for minor health violations would be like interrupting your grandfather in the middle of a badass story to tell him that no one says "Oriental" any more.

Burger Guys' original location (12225 Westheimer) earned just one violation during a recent inspection: equipment/glassware/utensils/plates not handled in a way that prevents contamination (corrected).

In the middle of the road, Taco Milagro (2555 Kirby) earned six violations Friday. An inspector found potential contamination stemming from improper utensil use (corrected); approved methods for rapid cooling not utilized; poorly designed or maintained equipment; no Food Dealer's Permit; and a lack of hand-washing and no-smoking signs.

Didy's Sports Bar (2213 Richmond) wouldn't let us inside when we were in the area awhile back and tried to check it out. We'd heard rumors about what gets sold in there but weren't allowed to join the "private party," as the bouncer said. An inspector was allowed to join, however, and ended up finding six violations. Those included toilet room lacking covered waste receptacle; toilet room with no tight-fitting doors; wall/ceiling not maintained in good repair; poorly designed or maintained equipment; no Food Dealer's Permit; and no hand-washing signs.

Finally, Ben's Beans (1302 Dallas) earned just one violation: "Toilet room door(s) not kept closed." Because why not just leave the door open when you leave the bathroom? Why not wear sweatpants everywhere you go? Why not skip the shower and wash yourself with a rag on a stick? Merry Christmas, you filthy animals.
