Halloween Cocktails: The Brain Hemorrhage
Halloween is still more than a week away, but because it's my favorite holiday, I've been celebrating for, like, the past month. Although I usually just indulge my All Hallows' Eve fixation by consuming enormous amounts of candy and seasonal baked goods, this year I'm branching out into cocktails.

I came up with the idea for "The Brain Hemorrhage" while watching House and enjoying some lovely Cruzan spiced rum. Who knew snarky medical commentary could inspire such culinary creativity? The recipe, after the jump.

The Brain Hemorrhage
2 oz light or spiced rum
2 oz coconut cream
1/2 oz pineapple juice
1 red ice cube
Place red ice cube in pre-chilled glass. Mix rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice in a shaker and pour over ice cube.
The trick to this recipe is using a coconut mixer that is thick enough to partially hide ice cube; I found coconut milk to be too thin so I went with cream. A premade piña colada mix might also work well provided it's not too watery.
And, of course, it doesn't hurt to use an ice cube actually shaped like a human brain.
The Brain Hemorrhage is very much like a piña colada but with one key difference: It's served on the rock (that's right, just one cube) so that the drink "bleeds" as the ice melts. You can use an ice cube made with colored water, though I recommend freezing some fruit punch or cranberry juice for a cocktail that changes flavor as well as color as you drink it. Neat, huh?
