Upcoming Events: Free Mexican Food, Plus Drink Pink in October
Discovery Green's new Green Film Series begins tonight, September 28, and will run until November, showing films designed to educate and challenge the community on how to respect and care for the earth. Tonight's offering, which will begin just as the sun goes down, will be "FRESH," a documentary that celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing the food system.

As the presenting sponsor of tonight's film and the ongoing series, Chipotle will provide a free burrito card to each attendee and -- tonight only! -- will serve up its famous tacos for free. Disco Green park-goers can also enjoy free samples from Saint Arnold Brewing Company, and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly will provide free samples. That's right -- everything tonight is completely free and open to the public.
Still want more free Mexican food? Next Thursday, October 4, is National Taco Day and to celebrate, Pollo Campero will be giving away a free taco with purchase all day long. Choose between an Argentinian Steak taco, a Yucatan Carnitas taco or a Peruvian Chicken taco to complete your fast 'n' fresh Latin meal.
And in other "national" news, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Elouise Adams Jones is raising awareness at her two restaurants -- Ouisie's Table and The Bird & The Bear -- with some pretty 'n' pink treats all month long.
Start your day with some pink pancakes at Ouisie's (served on weekdays starting at 7 a.m. and at 8 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays) or grab a stack for lunch at The Bird & The Bear, then polish them off with a pinky Prosecco cocktail with Chambord. A percentage of sales from the pink pancakes and cocktails will go to benefit Reconstruction of a Survivor, a charitable organization that sponsors many services for women who are diagnosed with breast cancer as well as cancer survivors.
The Four Seasons Hotel downtown will also be encouraging people to "drink pink" this October with month-long drink specials that include Rosé Wine Flights (two selected wines plus a sparkling rosé), The "B" Cup and The Pink Melon. The "B" Cup is a whiskey-based drink using Texas's own Rebecca Creek Whiskey mixed with a frozen strawberry cube and mint-infused simple syrup, all topped with a flamed lemon coin. The Pink Melon is a refreshing strawberry-watermelon sangria made with Chambord and rosé wine. Proceeds will be going to local cancer charities.
The Tasting Room at Uptown Park will be hosting Veuve Clicquot's Senior Winemaker, Cyril Brun, for a very special wine dinner on Thursday, October 11, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Brun will lead guests through a six-course dinner menu, where each dish will be paired with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Champagne.
The dinner is limited to 30 guests, all of whom will have ample opportunity to visit with Brun and to learn more about the creation of Veuve Clicquot's famous Champagnes. In addition, each guest will receive a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne to take home - and will have the opportunity to get Mr. Brun's signature on the bottle. Tickets are $150 (plus tax and gratuity) per person or $1,000 (plus tax and gratuity) per table of 8 people. Call 713-993-9800 for reservations.
Always wanted to be a chef? Head out to Brennan's on Wednesday, October 17, at 7 p.m. when the The Culinary Institute of America will be hosting a reception for prospective students. The world's premier not-for-profit culinary college doesn't just teach cooking, either: It helps students build careers throughout the food world, including catering, research and development, education, food styling, food journalism and other food-related fields.
The evening will be hosted by CIA alumnus Carl Walker '81, general manager of Brennan's, and attendees will have their college application fee waived. They'll also qualify for a $3,000 tuition grant if they enroll in the upcoming November through March entry dates.
