Upcoming Events: Low, Slow and EaDo
Next Thursday night from 7 to 10 p.m., help support Foodways Texas while enjoying some terrific Texan beer and bites at the Saint Arnold brewery with Low and Slow: An Evening of Smoked Food & Film. The evening will feature short films by Keeley Steenson about Texas barbecue traditions along with tastings of the food you'll see on film. Also on hand will be nibbles from local restaurants such as Down House, Haven, Himalaya, Hugo's, Reef, Revival Market and the soon-to-open The Pass & Provisions. Admission is $50, which goes to benefit Foodways Texas's oral history projects.
Keep the party going on Friday, August 24, when the EaDo District hosts its first-ever pub crawl. The EaDo Pub Crawl will visit three bars -- Lucky's Pub, Cork Soakers and Little Woodrow's -- and feature special appearances by the Houston Dynamo cheerleaders as well as free food and drink specials along the way. Complete the entire pub crawl, and you'll receive a limited-edition Saint Arnold pint glass. The crawl is free and runs from 5 to 8 p.m.
Although we all love Tex-Mex, it's hard to love hot and heavy dishes like enchiladas in the summer. So chef Alex Padilla at the original Ninfa's on Navigation has introduced a summer-only menu that includes fresh vegetables, cold soup and seafood. Specials such as spicy watermelon gazpacho with pineapple, mango, jicama, Gulf shrimp and fried plantains or crispy duck tacos in corn tortillas with jicama and papaya slaw will be available throughout August.
To quench your thirst, a daily selection of aguas frescas will also be available at Ninfa's in rotating flavors such as watermelon, cantaloupe and lemon. For something more adult, the bar has also concocted a cucumber margarita with Espolón Blanco tequila.
For more adult beverages -- about 400 more of them, at last count -- head south to Galveston and celebrate the end of summer over Labor Day weekend with the third annual Brewmasters Craft Beer Fest at Moody Gardens. The festival runs from August 31 through September 2 and features a weekend packed with tastings, tours, pairing and pub crawls. Tickets are on sale now, with a Big Hopper pass giving you access to every single event for $124.
Also coming up in September is the big Metropolitan Cooking & Entertainment Show on September 15 and 16 at Reliant Center. The show and exhibition is bigger than ever this year and is bringing big-time celebrity chefs to town for cooking demonstrations and speaking engagements, including Giada de Laurentiis, Jacques Pépin and Paula Deen. (We hope Mrs. Deen's husband wears proper attire this time if he wants to dine at Vic & Anthony's again.)
