The Crispy Lobster Sandwich at Backstreet Cafe.
One of the many things that intrigues me about the Victorian era was how the general overabundance of shellfish meant foods like lobster were more fare for the hoi polloi than the aristocratic minority. This year, a bumper crop in the Northeast has once again made lobster cheaper for the masses. And with the lowered cost of bulk orders for restaurants, chefs are getting creative in their uses of this crustacean. Here are 10 Lobster Dishes to Try in Houston.

No. 9: Crispy Lobster Sandwich at Backstreet Cafe

The quintessential lobster sandwich is, of course, the infamous lobster roll. But any old shack can slap together some tail meat, mayonnaise and lemon juice on a buttered bun for a decent roll. Backstreet Cafe takes the concept of the seafood sandwich to a whole new level by layering chunks of battered lobster, onion rings, lettuce, tomato and red pepper rémoulade in between two large slices of brioche.

For anyone who thinks deep-fried lobster is the epitome of vulgarity, please try this sandwich. Sure, lobster in its purest form, boiled with a dash of melted butter, is absolutely transcendent. But that doesn't mean a layer of batter demeans the distinctive taste and texture of this crustacean.

The oily crisp plus the spicy rémoulade are the perfect complement to the sweet lobster meat, which definitely holds its own in the face of equally rich flavors. For those who long for the notes of mayonnaise common to the lobster roll, there's a side of creamy red potato salad.

Backstreet Cafe's crispy lobster sandwich is served on a pristine white plate, but their servers are so accommodating, I bet you could get it in a basket with red and white checked paper if you asked.
