What's Cooking on Pinterest? Natural Skin Tanner Smoothie
This week on Pinterest, I wanted to create a beverage instead of food. The Food & Drink section was filled with cocktails and alcoholic beverages, but all of them seemed ordinary and simple. I then started looking for a milkshake, but none of them struck me as exciting. Then I came across a vibrant, colorful smoothie.

The caption below the photo of what appeared to be a blueberry-based smoothie said "7 detox smoothies." Intrigued, I clicked on the photo, leading me to a Web site of seven recipes using seasonal fruits and vegetables to create healthy, body-nourishing smoothies.
Because it's summer and we are all trying to get tan and keep that tan, I chose the natural skin tanner smoothie.
The reason this smoothie naturally tans your skin is because it includes a lot of beta carotene. In fact, every ingredient in this smoothie has beta carotene: cantaloupe, papaya, orange juice, carrot juice and ginger.
All of these ingredients contain beta carotene.
Making smoothies has to be one of the easiest things to do, if you use the proper proportions, that is.
To start making this smoothie, cut open the cantaloupe and slice into cubes. The recipe calls for a half cup, but I doubled the recipe, so I used one cup of cantaloupe cubes instead. Make sure your cantaloupe has the least amount of green on the outside when you're buying it at the grocery store. The less green it is on the outside, the more ripe it is on the inside.
Next, slice open the papaya, discard the seeds with a spoon and slice into cubes. Use one cup of papaya cubes as well. Papayas are beautiful on the inside with the bright pink-orange flesh and black seeds. Add the cantaloupe and papaya to the blender once both are cubed and measured.

Add the two juice components of the smoothie to the blender: the juice of a large orange, since we are doubling the recipe, and one cup of carrot juice.
I recommend not using the last ingredient of this recipe, one small knob of ginger, because you'll be sipping chunks of pungent ginger through your straw -- that was quite disgusting. Even a small knob of ginger will overpower the other great components of the smoothie. Instead, I recommend using crystallized ginger or completely omitting the ginger element.
Carrots and ginger do go well together, so use a sweetened version of ginger to balance the bitterness with the natural sweetness of the fruit. You want a sweet smoothie, not a sharp and spicy smoothie.
Once everything is dumped into the blender, let her rip. I wish I had thought to omit the ginger or substitute it for something sweeter, but it sure was beautiful to look at.
Without the ginger, this would have been a wonderfully sweet smoothie.
