Belgian-style frites at Jeannine's Bistro are among the city's best.
I think I'm firmly on record as thinking that most National ______ Days are dumb. But there are a few I'm happy to celebrate, like National Tequila Day (coming up on July 23) or the recently passed National Fried Chicken Day. That short list also includes National French Fry Day, because I will never pass up an excuse to shovel fried potatoes into my face.

With that in mind, here are my ten current favorite places in which to accomplish this important task.

10. Jeannine's Bistro

Of the Belgian joints in town, I actually prefer the mussels at Jeannine's Bistro as well as the homemade mayonnaise, although the frites themselves at Cafe Brussels are better. Still, the twice-fried frites at Jeannine's are nothing to scoff at, and are especially delicious at lunch -- that's when a nice portion of moules-frites is only $12.

The fries themselves aren't homemade, but the kimchi that tops them is. And since kimchi fries are the thing to order at this food truck, that's what matters most. Along with super-fresh and tangy kimchi, the fun, carnival-style curly fries also get a scattering of green onions, salty feta cheese and Sriracha mayonnaise for only $4 -- which is more than enough to split between two people.

8. Zelko Bistro

Zelko Bistro's crispy, twiggy fries topped with parmesan and truffle oil remain some of the few fries in town which can carry off this often trite topping with aplomb. Part of the reason is how perfectly fried the long, thin fries are. And part of the reason is that they're usually paired up with one of the better burgers in town, too.

Someday I might try Bernie's and eat in my car and feel like Kirstie Alley on a bender.

You don't like kimchee, so maybe it's you that is the problem.

Last few times at Zelko (and one of the many reasons we don't go anymore) the fries haven't even made it to us at room temperature.  Once we sent them back and the replacement fries were even cooler.

Not mentioned were Hubcap Grill's Country Fries, covered in cream gravy & bacon bits. The stinky fries are great, too. I love the Truffle Fries, from the Burger Palace (2800 Sage---where the Burger King lives) & serves kobe beef burgers. I'm not a fan of kimchee. I've enjoyed the food @ Kobecue (3957 Richmond), but not the kimchee fries. They have a spicy pork burger, with 'spicy mayo'. Turns out, it's wayyyy too much sriracha & not enough mayo. It's like chipotle & mayo. Don't overdo the hot sauce. One cannot taste the meat.

No BB's Tex Cajun virgin?!?  If you're going to add toppings to the fries, nothing in town beats the ones at BB's.  And I've had most on this list, including Bernie's!

Do they still do those rosemary fries at Block 7? Those were really good.

recently I've started up a 1-man crusade to get people to start calling them "Belgian fries" instead of French, to no avail. We need historically-accurate terms for our delicious snacks!

Little Big's fries used to be my favorite in town. But now, the past three times I've been there they've been either soggy or overcooked. Not sure what happened, but I like their pork sliders enough to keep going.

Fantastic list!  And when my friend and I go to Barnaby's we always preface our salads with a bowl of those hot, thin, seasoned shoestrings with red eye and bulls eye sauces (just ask...)

I've had the Tex Cajun thing at BB's (Montrose) when it was great, and I've had it when it was almost too salty to eat

i always thought they were called french fries because that's the type of cut used to make them.
