The slogan "Powered by rice" is a play on owner John Peterson's other passion: super-fast, super-slick Asian cars, or ricers.
Would you believe me if I told you that some of the best fried chicken in town comes from a Chinese food truck? Well, believe it -- because the Golden Doomba Special at the Rice Box Truck rivals Frenchy's and The Breakfast Klub with its golden, crunchy, lightly battered drumsticks.

The Golden Doomba is named for owner John Peterson, whose Twitter handle is -- you guessed it -- @goldendoomba. It was his idea to add fried chicken to an otherwise American-Chinese menu.

"When I first opened," Peterson says, "there were quite a few people that were always asking for no pork in anything. So I decided to make it easy." The Golden Doomba Special of fried chicken was born, although Peterson couldn't have known it would be one of the most popular items on the truck at the time.

At first, the drumsticks were battered and fried using potato starch -- it lent them a distinctly crunchy texture -- but these days, Peterson says, plain old cornstarch is employed instead. Regardless, the drumsticks still taste as good as ever: wonderfully, arm-drippingly juicy inside and crispy, crackly crunchy on the outside.

They're served in a kitschy Chinese take-out container -- like everything else here -- on top of cabbage and rice, which easily makes one box into a meal. That said, I always throw in an eggroll with my order, as Rice Box Truck makes a mean eggroll, too. You typically can find both the fried chicken and the eggrolls along Westheimer in Montrose, where the truck is often parked outside Anvil Bar & Refuge. Or simply follow it on Twitter.
