God Knows Why, But You Can Now Buy Game of Thrones and True Blood Cookbooks

Um. Okay.
I am the last person in America to have neither watched nor read Game of Thrones and/or True Blood. I'm not being willful about this; I just don't have cable. And my patience for campy vampire TV shows ran out with the cancellation of Moonlight and season 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Anyway, I'm sure I'd like Game of Thrones very much (True Blood, probably not), but I just can't fathom for the life of me why the show now has its very own cookbook. From what I understand, many of the dishes in the GOT universe feature ingredients such as dragon eggs and live doves. So...yeah.

While the idea of re-creating historic recipes always appeals to me, I'm not terribly interested in replicating fake dishes any more than I'm interested in drinking a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster or butterbeer. To my mind, the fun thing about these dishes and drinks is that they exist purely in the imagination and that no one person's concept of them is "correct," per se.

However, as usual, I am probably just being a giant jerk about something for no reason, because people are really, really, really excited about the GOT cookbook. (Oh, and you too, True Blood. Whatever.) So more power to them. Sincerely. And over at our sister blog, Art Attack, you can find Abby Koenig's roundup of not only these two cookbooks but other TV shows that should have their own cookbooks, too.

Next thing you know, some yoinks will be repackaging the Gallery of Regrettable Food and passing it off as a Mad Men cookbook. Until then...

The Game of Thrones cookbook is based on the books, not the show. Food is described a LOT in the books, and sounds very tasty--stuff like lemon cakes and meat pies, sweet red wine, dark ale, etc. etc. so it makes sense to me!

Season 7 of BtVS was EPIC.  Just saying.
