100 Favorite Dishes 2012: No. 82, Short Rib Sandwich at Shepherd Park Draught House

Photos by Troy Fields
This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston® issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.

Shepherd Park Draught House is where grown-up pub grub and craft beers mingle merrily just outside the Loop, providing a welcome haven for those semi-suburbanites who don't feel like braving the thickets of traffic and bars just inside 610. It's as effortlessly cool as Grand Prize Bar, but cleaner (to wit: No one has yet puked on me in the bathroom at Shepherd Park); and while it doesn't have the beer selection of, say, The Hay Merchant or Mongoose versus Cobra, it has a much larger food menu.

My favorite from that menu is the short rib sandwich (followed very closely by the smoked Gouda and bacon burger), which takes two pieces of buttery Texas toast and fills the space in between with savory shreds of short ribs in a tangy balsamic-tinged sauce. The balsamic vinegar helps cut the fattiness -- the wonderful, wonderful fattiness, I should mention -- of the meat, as does an ample heap of crunchy coleslaw on top.

And you know what else cuts through that meat like a bright knife? The Karbach Rodeo Clown Double IPA on draft. Yes, I know this is the second day in a row I've talked about that beer, but it's just that good. Go find out for yourself at Shepherd Park if you don't believe me -- and get a sandwich while you're there.

It's a toss-up for me, depending on the food and the weather (yes, seriously). The hotter it gets, the more I'm going to lean toward the Hopadillo.

Serious question... and a preface. I think Karbach is great, and I enjoy drinking both IPAs. Do you like Rodeo Clown Double IPA better than Hopadillo IPA? I've never had the draught versions side-by-side, but I prefer Hopadillo in the canned versions. Just wondering if anyone else feels the same.
