Upcoming Events: Southern Star in Northern Houston and Wino Wednesdays

Chef Gary Grewal will be serving an array of Indian dishes, all matched with international wines from Republic National sommelier Brett Walters. The five-course menu includes pan-fried grouper with mango beurre blanc, lamb patties with passion chutney and stuffed squid with fresh tomato salad. Call 713-622-2005 for reservations.
Starting next week, RA Sushi will be celebrating its eighth annual Nicky's Week, in which 100 percent of the proceeds from a portion of its menu will go to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Help kick cancer's ass while you nosh on dishes such as garlic-citrus yellowtail tapas and pork gyoza, and cocktails like the strawberry saketini. Beer, wine and other nonalcoholic drinks are also available on the Nicky's Week menu, which runs from May 27 through June 2.
This weekend, head north to Conroe if you don't already have Memorial Day plans and celebrate with the fourth annual Southern Star Brew-B-Que Festival on May 26 and 27 at the Lone Star Convention and Expo Center (9055 Airport Road). Live music, barbecue and cold craft beer will all be on offer, as well as events such as the annual Chihuahua Dog Races and the Strong Man/Strong Woman Keg Toss.
Tickets for the Southern Star Brew-B-Que Festival are $18 in advance or $20 at the door. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lone Star Health Clinic and the Oscar Johnson Foundation. Gates open on Saturday (the one day that admission is free), May 26, at 11 a.m., with the music running from noon to 6 p.m. and the carnival until 11 p.m. On Sunday, May 27, the event runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Throughout both June and July, Haven is offering a terrific way to celebrate making it through Hump Day: Wino Wednesdays. For only $10 a person, chef Randy Evans will provide appetizers and unlimited wine tastings every Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. beginning on June 6. The weekly gatherings continue through Wednesday, July 25, with different wines provided each time.
And for the next month -- starting May 26 and running through June 16 -- Brennan's of Houston will be serving a special three-course Brunchin' for Branches menu benefit the Memorial Park Conservancy. On Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., chef Danny Trace will serve courses including turtle soup, Eggs Brennan's, bread pudding and more (as well as special brunch cocktails like the Memorial Melon Mist) for $32 a person, 15 percent of which will go to benefit the Conservancy.
