Sampler Plate: This Week in Food Blogs
He8, She8: The first of two new (to us!) blogs this week, He8, She8 is similar in concept to 2 Dine For, in which a couple eats together and then reports independently on their own experiences at a restaurant. He8, She8's latest review is of Feast, where they both gave the nose-to-tail palace a solid 8 out of 10.
DeBo Houston: The second new blog isn't so much a food blog as it is a lifestyle blog. DeBo's posts include everything from fashion to music writing, with a few restaurant reviews thrown in along the way. Her latest is of The Tasting Room at CityCentre, where she enjoyed a Tuscan chicken sandwich with truffle-Parmesan fries and an impromptu wine flight courtesy of a helpful server.
Foodie Houston: Jodie has a great idea for a "thank you" gift for that most important of people in your life right now: your CPA. Show them a little gratitude for figuring out that tax refund, and get them these too-cute calculator cookies from local bakery Michael's Cookie Jar.
Urban Swank: Summer's coming, which -- to me -- means hot dog season is nigh. Urban Swank gets a head start by chowing down on the big dogs at Happy Fatz in the Heights, opting for the Texas Chile Dog: a Frito pie on a hot dog. Bliss.
My Gastro Tour: We wouldn't have a love-hate relationship with social media if there wasn't something to love about it occasionally. In this case, Groupon helped El Don find a quality Peruvian restaurant in League City -- Chuyos Peruvian Deli -- of all places.
Robb Walsh: Lastly, we all need a dose of some serious, introspective food writing from former Press critic Robb Walsh. Lately, Walsh writes:
It's hard to figure out where Texas cooking is headed right now. There are a lot of different trends going on and they have little to do with each other. In fact, sometimes it seems like the chefs in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin arrived here from different planets. In this series, I'll check out food from some hot Texas chefs and look for clues about the big picture.
He starts the series off with a look at one of the most cutting-edge and creative cooks in Dallas these days: Matt McCallister.
