Haute Wheels Food Truck Festival Comes Rolling Through Again

Good Dog Hot Dogs lucked into one of the few shady spots last year.
I think it goes without saying that last year's Haute Wheels food truck festival was rather disastrous. It was almost unbearably hot, there was very little shade to be found, some food trucks were running very late and almost all of the trucks had lines that stretched across the blazing parking lot of the HCC Southwest campus. Let's not mince words, okay?

But there were those of us who held out hope that a better event would emerge from the Haute Wheels fallout.

"If the Haute Wheels food truck festival was better organized it could be totally rad," wrote Twitter user and event attendee Caitlin Kaluza after the festival was over. "Let's just say I'm looking forward to next year."

Well, it's next year now. And we're looking forward to a brand-new Haute Wheels food truck festival, too -- especially since Eating...Our Words is one of the sponsors. The 20 food trucks that are participating this year are also getting excited.

Phamily Bites is one of the many food trucks that will be making a repeat appearance from last year.
The lineup so far includes:

...with more still to be announced.

The second coming of the Haute Wheels festival will take place on May 12 and 13 -- that's Mother's Day weekend, in case your mom really loves mobile food -- from noon to 5 p.m. each day at HCC Southwest (5601 West Loop South).

Tickets are on sale now for $16 each, which includes admission as well as five drink tickets for either full sodas and/or waters or samples of beer and/or wine. Stick around next week, and we'll be giving away free pairs of those tickets to a few lucky readers.

And this year, Haute Wheels promises two things: shorter lines and more shade. If the weather will just hold up until May, it looks like the food truck festival we've always wanted could be close to finally happening.

It is no different than making a left turn except for the fact that you can stick your head out of the left window.  Of course if you are a giraffe then you are ok on right turns.

The service is awful and without the trademark courageous superb feeling. Great assistance good food is the concept. The place is also nice and clean.

Last year, most were under the impression (myself included) that the admission included free samples of each truck.  I don't care what price point is needed to make this work, but until it is a "tasting" festival, I expect it to continually be a disaster.  A food festival with no samples?  Hopefully at least this time patrons know what they're paying for.

Happening the same weekend as art cars.  Mistake number 1.

So, wait... you pay $16 to get approx $5 worth of water or beer, then you have to pay for the food at the actual food trucks, too? What is the point of this, it's not like folks will reasonably be able to try all of them... it would cost too much, and after just a few you'd get full. Might as well just spend a Saturday driving around to try a few.

The entry price is the same reason I didn't, and plan on not going, to the ifest this year. $18 dollars at the door, then paying for drinks and food is just too much money on a day outing. Same for this, $16 is too much.

I like the part when they said $16.00...No, wait...I did not like that part and it was a deal breaker.

No way would I do that again. Not worth the waiting in line. Try having it at a place where the trucks can be spaced out and have more of them. $16 to get in to then pay to eat? Don't do it!

I can understand how they might promise more shade (I enjoyed the VIP tent last year and thought how hard can it be to put up more canopies) but just how are they going to make the lines shorter?

And there will be alot of food trucks at the FREE art car parade.

I agree, the $16 kind of defeats the purpose of a food truck.....
