All-star Sweet & Savory Fundraiser Raises $19,100 for Lucky Dog Rescue

Pastry chef, Top Chef Just Desserts contestant, and hometown girl Rebecca Masson loves dogs. "If I could save them all myself, I would," she said as she thanked all those who had generously donated time and funds for the Lucky Dog Rescue charity.

This past Sunday, her Sweet and Savory fundraiser at Ralph Smith Studios featured an all-star lineup of local and visiting celebrity chefs, many of whom were fellow cheftestants from her season on Bravo's reality series, Top Chef Just Desserts.

There was Craig Poirier of the MB Post in Manhattan Beach, who served mini raspberry chocolate push pops and fun cones of chocolate soup topped with sugar-dusted coconut bambolini. Amanda Rockman of the Bristol and Balena in Chicago created a beautiful vanilla basque cake with strawberry, creme fraiche, and champagne sabayon

Megan Ketover of the Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati made a delectable brown butter and caramel ice cream sandwich. Katzie Guy-Hamilton from New York Central and the Grand Hyatt New York offered buttermilk waffle balls, poached rhubarb and elderflower ice cream.

Uchi's Philip Speer created a delicate delice de bourgoyne and liquid brioche, served in a small bamboo boat. Rebecca Masson created melt-in-your-mouth risotto fritters, topped with tangy pickled blueberries and aromatic D'aristi Xtabentun honey liqueur ice cream.

Of the local chefs in the house, Jason Gould of Cyclone Anaya's made a fantastic smoked lamb shoulder on grilled green onion johnnycake with curried squash, cilantro yogurt and puffed rice; Jason Hill and Matt Opaleski of H-town StrEATS food truck offered up pan-fried crab and shrimp dumplings with yuzu sauce; and Adam Garcia of Revival Market created a savory pastrami melt made with all local products.

Everything was delicious, but it was Pastry Chef Carlos Enriquez's nitro bubble gum drops that stole the show. They were handed out on a spoon, and meant to be popped in your mouth, then you could immediately blow cold smoke out of your mouth and nose. Enriquez, who owns Pastry Solutions in Los Angeles, also served passionfruit, coconut and mango parfaits in a test tube, along with liquid s'mores on a stick.

There was plenty to drink as well. Ryan Rouse and Adrienne Byard from Grand Prize Bar created two cocktails, one called the "bottled suffering bastard," a peachy-colored concoction in a soda pop bottle, and a tangy, refreshing cocktail called "ready steady." Gerard Bertrand donated wine, Saint Arnold's donated beer and Katz coffee donated coffee.

A whole slew of local chefs came out in support of the event as well, some as volunteers, others as attendees. Spotted were Pastry Chef Chris Leung of Restaurant Conat, Executive Chef Kevin Bryant of the Capitol at St. Germaine, Chef Kevin Naderi of Roost, Chef Ryan Pera of Revival Market, and Pastry Chef Johnny Wesley of Killen's Steakhouse.

The all-star fundraiser racked in a record total of $19,100. One-of-a-kind foodie-related silent-auction donations greatly contributed to the final amount raised, as patrons bid from $100 to $875 for items like an overnight stay at the Driskill Hotel with dinner at Uchi Austin, a six-person chef's tasting with wine from Mockingbird Bistro, a year's worth of cheesecake from Ooh La La, a chef's tasting dinner for four with wine pairings from Brasserie 19, a multi-course James Beard dinner for four with pairings from Killen's Steakhouse, "Dine on the Line" for four from Haven, a chef's dinner for six with wine pairings from Fleming's, a chef's dinner for four with wine pairings at Coppa, dinner for four at La Fisheria, Sunday dinner at the Wilson's (Masson's family), gift certificates to Triniti and t'afia, and even a chance to dine with Houston Press food critic Katharine Shilcutt.

All proceeds benefited www.luckyrescue.org. Look out for the next Sweet and Savory, slated for sometime this fall.

What amazing local donations! Houston's generosity never ceases to amaze me. Outstanding outcome & all for the puppy dogs! This 713 community is truly a blessing to all who live here. The nation is hard-pressed to see another community working as hard as ours does together. Go 'head Houston! Great story, as always, Mai!!

Great piece--and photos too, Mai. It's like I was there, without the subsequent purge, liquid diet and extra-personal-training-time expenses. 

Oh, and who posts negative comments about chefs making chocolate for dog causes? Seems like some of these chefs had to travel here. Who are you, Rick Santorum?

Awesome, $19,000 that they'll only use to help the inner circle people while completely excluding people not in the clique that just want to help some dogs.

@elgallo the people running the event donated their time and labor, countless volunteers donated their time, numerous restaurants generously donated silent auction items, and attendees generously donated their money. It was a labor of love to save animals that have nowhere to go. The money doesn't go to helping "inner circle people," it goes to the dogs. Where is this coming from?

I'm not sure what you mean by "inner circle people" egallo. Our group has saved close to 500 dogs since our founding; mostly rescued from BARC. We are always looking for fosters w/ the offer to pay for all vetting if you'd like to "help some dogs" - please contact us. Our group is hardly a "clique" - just a grass roots group of people trying to make a difference - one dog at a time. We honor the work of all groups working to do the same in a city that has no spay/neuter strategy and an alarmingly high euthanization rate. Please feel free to contact us via luckyrescue@gmail.com.

We contacted you about a dog that we found and unfotunately couldn't keep because we already have dogs of our own. After an extremely long wait we were offered a curt and dismissive response indicating that you guys had little interest in helping. We even said we were more than willing to foster him and pay for everything, we just needed a little guidance. We were basically told that if he wasn't severely malnourished, sick or in a shelter there wasn't anything Lucky Dog would do. Like I said, we didn't need money, just ideas. Luckily for us, we've found a terrific organization that wants to help and is totally doing so.After being at this for a few months now I've met several people whose experience mirrors ours, that unless you're one of the people already well established in the group, they're not very interested in helping out. I believe that you guys do help some dogs, it's just that our experience was really not what we were expecting from an organization as well known as yours. I would have chalked it up to a one time thing until I started meeting other people in the rescue community that had the same experience.I've no interest pursuing this any further because my only real concern is for the dogs and this doesn't benefit them in the least. We'll just keep trying to find a home for our foster and then hopefully more after that.And Shilcutt, stick to food because I know exactly how they operate.

Egallo, I'm not sure this is the best format to discuss your particular situation. Obviously I can't tell who you are by your username here or have any way to go back delve into a specific situation. We are contacted about many dogs every day and we all have full-time jobs so sometimes it does take a bit to hear back (though typically within 24 hours). We're not able to take them all on. We state on our website that we resuce primarily from BARC and we are limited by the number of dogs we can manage in our program for a variety of reasons. We definitely do not have a set policy to accept or reject dogs into the program based on malnourishment or being sick in a shelter so again, not sure of your particular situation, but I just wanted to state that is not a general policy for us. 

I'm glad you were able to find help for this particular dog, While I apologize for your experience, I think it is uncalled for to remark so negatively on our work in such a general way when we have placed so many dogs into forever homes (that is a documentable fact) and because we do have a thorough process, we very rarely have a return. We also have many folks in the rescue community who support us but certainly there are some who don't (again, for a variety of reasons). We accept that and appreciate the support we do have and from the hundreds of folks who have adopted from us and continue to support us.

There are many rescue groups in this city - there has to be - becuase we have such a huge problem and there are no good options when people find dogs or for the many dogs on death row at shelters. Every group has their own way and their own process because everyone has their own idea of how it should be done and I respect that. We realize we can't make everyone happy becuase we can't solve every problem but we are proud of the work we've done. Everyone is free to support whatever group(s) they'd like to support.  I'm a volunteer who has worked with a variety of groups over the years so I have my own perspective from that as well.

I don't think negativity surrounding any group that is doing their best to place homeless dogs helps the situation in Houston.
