Vote for Houston's Worst Barbecue; We'll Do the Dirty Work of Eating It

Categories: Q

GOODCUE.jpg
On Monday, we asked our readers to tell us where they've found the worst barbecue in Houston. Rubbery ribs, dry brisket, shriveled-up sausage: We want to know where the truly bad stuff is, so as to better highlight the good.

We also wanted to know what Houstonians thought of as bad 'cue: Is it drenched in sauce? Is it too smoky? Not smoky enough? Too heavy on the fat? Too lean?

And we wanted the chance to explore what is typically thought of as "bad" barbecue to find out if it's indeed legitimately bad and without redemption...or simply misunderstood.

You gave us a huge list of barbecue offenders, and now it's time to narrow those choices down. After the jump, vote on the restaurant you think deserves a caning for its 'cue. A panel of barbecue judges will then try the final five -- the bottom of the barbecue barrel -- next week and make a final determination as to what is truly Houston's worst BBQ.

I'm voting for Rudy's! Rudy's is the absolute worst BBQ I've ever had. It has no body, the texture is greasy and soft and it's covered in a black pepper crust...

SERIOUSLY???!!!! You ask for the worst b-b-q and you COMPLETELY forget to include Brown Sugar BBQ on gulf freeway?  LOLOLOL  If you ask me, that bbq place is sooo bad, I'd swear it was a money laundering business...  I usually give businesses the benefit of the doubt but nuh uh...Not this place...One and Done!

I have had some decent BBQ at Brookstreet, but most of the time that brisket is dry and tasteless. It's very hit and miss.

I would guess that most people don't know the difference between good and bad BBQ. Pour a ton of sauce over some meat and they'll call it good. Why else would some of these places exist?

I'm so glad pit masters is on here. They are by far the WORST and I have NO CLUE how hey won the best in the woodlands. Pretty sure it was rigged.

Goode's should be on this list. Not too good. Rudy's should not be on this list.. That is some damn good fatty brisket.

Pizzatola's hands down the worst I've ever had.  Over priced, awful, and let's face it, who wants BBQ from a place that sounds like an Italian restaurant?

It's not in Houston, but No Name Bar-B-Q in Pasadena is pretty bad. Dry, tasteless meat, awful sauce, baked potatoes that looked like they'd been baked last week.

The area around the Bellaire Triangle should be called the B-B-Q-da Triangle.  I can't imagine packing any more lousy bbq in such a small geographic area.

I had to vote for Pappas.  Not just because the food sucks (their beef ribs aren't too bad), but also because I would expect more out of that chain.

It's good to know I'm not the only person crazy enough to appreciate the beef ribs at Pappas (at least when they come out right).

Brown Sugar's should definitely be on this list.

Whoa nelly... who in the heck put Pit Masters on the list? I have only had their pulled pork and bison burger but they both are very delicious. The best pulled pork EVER!!

I know!!! Pitmaster is a great family owned place..the owner is always there and friendly.

The Swinging Door in Richmond in Pecan Grove area is not very good either and over priced

WOW! No shit. I use to live near Old Hickory Hollow, and tried it once, ONCE! It was horrible. Now I live in Bellaire, and have tried all the little BBQ spots, and I have to say that they are equally shitty. What gives? I suppose it's depressing, but what can one expect. I am from New Orleans, and not every restaurant in that town has authentic New Orleans down either.

I got spoiled on awesome barbecue living in austin before i moved here; i have been mostly disappointed since. Some of the best barbecue is around austin and in the hill country in my experience.

Because Houston BBQ sucks, in general. It's rare to find good que in H-Town. Now if it's good seafood you're looking for, we're the place.  You want good Tex-Mex? Go to San Antonio...not sure what you'd find in DFW, annoying plastic people?

Central Texas in Pearland can be quite good.  I'm surprised they're on the list.

Why on EARTH are Luling (although the sides are awful) and Pitmaster on the Worst Poll? Those are great BBQ joints!

Ed T.
Ed T.

Luling is on the list because the location on Richmond ave serves really crappy BBQ.

Also, be awre there is NO relation between this place and the outstanding BBQ in Luling. Just ask the folks in Luling sometimes how they feel about this situation.

Pit Masters almost made me give up BBQ it was so bad.

Because Luling City Market is just plain bad. I would eat a McRib and call it Barbecue before I darken the door of that particular establishment again.

Some of the best is Central Texas Style BBQ in Pearland

Ton

No. Central Texas Style doesn't smoke their meat, the sausage tastes like hot dogs, just bad, bad, bad.

Brisket BBQ on Bissonnet is awful.  I have no idea how they have stayed in business all these years.  Another one to avoid is Old Hickory Inn on South Braeswood.  It's probably a good idea to avoid any barbecue restaurant in Texas that has the word "hickory" in it's name!  Blech!

J Phillips
J Phillips

Amen to that. Both of them are disgusting.

John Davis

Well if you avoid the brisket at Brisket BBQ, their sausage is passable. Agreed on Old Hickory Inn. Charlie's on Bissonnet is okay.

Dwilkinson
Dwilkinson

Brisket gets my vote as well, I moved into that area about a year ago and was excited to try the local BBQ...that was a mistake.  No smoke on the meat, watery sauce, just absolutely nothing redeeming about it.

Bryan Kollmorgen

Luling City Market on Richmond is some of the worst BBQ I have ever eaten. Brisket was dry and crumbly, the sausage had no flavor, and he ribs were too fatty.  My wife dodn't even make it back to her car before she got sick.

The best I've had in town is Burn's.  The original closed after the owner passed away, but some of his relatives opened a restaurant at Antoine and Holly View. Well worth the trip.

c'mon Stockyard, I know you can win this!

Kagan23

when the owners are out front talking on their cell phones, standing next to their Range Rovers and Porsches, and a giant, bright sign is advertising how cheap their bbq is, somebody's Galleria money-making bbq dream has turned sour

BloodRoot

Some of the fake Pitmasters cook the meat, no wood smoke, no basting, no rub seasoningdrown meat in sauce and call it "BBQ" and proud to sell it to you

Mehan98

Didn't it win Best of The Woodlands too? Sad. I swear that list was influenced by corporate sponsorships because barely any of the choices made sense.

FattyFatBastard

The only one on here that seriously needs scolding is Pappa's.  They have far too many good venues to have BBQ that bad.
