Upcoming Throwdowns, Who's Hungry?
Chefs in Houston love each other, right? Let's test that theory and pit them against each other. Coming up in the next few weeks are two throwdowns fit for true foodies. And trust me when I say, you won't want to miss either of them.
Kiss My Grits: A Gulf Coast Throwdown
First up on Thursday, April 5, is the Young Texans Against Cancer's annual Kiss My Grits Gulf Coast Throwdow at The Capitol at Saint Germaine.
The event features an an all-star line-up of 11 top chefs, including: Chef David Guerrero of Samba Grille, Chef Randy Rucker of Restaurant Conat, Chefs Manabu Horiuchi and Gabe Medina of Kata Robata, Chef Jonathan Jones of Beavers, Chef Joshua Martinez of The Modular Food Truck, Chef Kevin Bryant of The Capitol at St. Germain, Chef Mary Cuclis of Pondicheri, Chef Michael Pellegrino of Max's Wine Dive, Chef Philip Speer of Uchi, Chef Ronnie Killen of Killen's Steakhouse, and Chef Ryan Hildebrand of Triniti.
All participating chefs are generously donating food and time in support of a good cause and for bragging rights. The winners last year were Seth Siegel-Gardner of Kata Robata, runner up Randy Rucker of Bootsie's, and Jason Gould of Cyclone Anaya's in third place. Let's see which chefs take home the prize this year.
It's best to get your tickets early (last year's event sold out). Tickets are $85 for YTAC members and $100 for non-members, and include unlimited tastings, a chance to hobnob up close with chefs, free-flowing cocktails provided for by Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Fireball Whiskey, Pura Vida Tequila, Dripping Springs Vodka, and St. Arnold's Beer, and live musical entertainment by killer cover-band Skyrocket. The event is presented by Sterling McCall Automotive Group.
Go Pig or Go Home! The First Annual Suckling Pig Throwdown
This is gonna be another good one, folks. On April 15, Kata Robata will host the first ever suckling pig throwdown.
Yes, ten top chefs will vie for the title of Suckling Pig Throwdown King, and it's already looking to be a macho battle.
From the Kata home team, Chef Gabe "Young Guns" Medina will show us how it's done. Also competing: Chef Michael "Make It Rain" Pellegrino of Max's Wine Dive, Chef "Iron" Mike Potowski of Benjy's, Chef Randy "The Ravenous" Rucker of Conat, Chef Ryan "The Ripper" Pera of Revival Market, Chef Steve "The Slaughter" Marques of The Tasting Room, Chef Raymond "The Venomous" Vandergaag of the The Tasting Room City Centre, Chef Seth "The Savage" Siegel-Gardner of Pilot Light Group, and Chef Terrence "The Terror" Gallivan of Pilot Light Group.
Tickets can be purchased in advance for $60, which will give you access to a smorgasbord of suckling pig creations, light bites from the Kata Robata kitchen, sake, beer from St Arnold's, and more. Proceeds will benefit Recipe For Success. Sysco has generously donated the suckling pigs for the event.
