Sampler Plate: This Week in Food Blogs

Categories: Leftovers

New York Times: Rest assured that even if you have to travel outside the great state of Texas, there are at least a handful of places across the country that do Texas barbecue right -- even in Los Angeles and New York City. Writing for the New York Times, local foodie J.C. Reid tells us all about them.

Serious Eats: To do the kind of barbecue research that Reid does on a regular basis, you have to know how to successfully execute a day-long food crawl. It's not for the faint of heart or stomach, but Serious Eats has an excellent food crawl guide that'll show you how to do it like the pros.

GQ: Just as Oxheart, his new restaurant with wife Karen Man, is already earning rave reviews, Chef Justin Yu gets some more positive attention -- this time from GQ. The magazine has put together a great interactive guide to Yu's favorite restaurants and other spots in Houston, and also answers the question of where Yu got all of the money cats for his famous Money Cat brunches.

Delicious Mischief: I might be one of the last people in town who hasn't yet been to the new Uchi. Radio host John DeMers finally made it in last week -- not for a lack of trying, as reservations have been fairly booked up -- and came away impressed with both the food and chef/owner Tyson Cole's influence from afar: "It was an epiphany...to see all his thoughts and philosophies poured out by a kitchen crew that on most nights works with him 165 miles away. Heck, I've known chefs who couldn't run a second restaurant two doors down!"

Aghastronome: If, like me, you're a fan of the caldo verde soup at Portugallia -- just light enough to be a springtime soup but hearty enough for cold, rainy days as well -- you'll love Mary Jane's recipe using Iberian ingredients you can find right here in Houston.

CultureMap: And for dessert, Sarah Rufca spotlights a sweet treat at The Tasting Room at CityCentre, where chef Raymond Vandergaag has created a pistachio pound cake that Bon Appétit associate photo editor Susan Getzendanner recently called her "dream dessert."
