Sampler Plate: This Week in Food Blogs
Wine Enthusiast: The talented Sean Beck, beverage director at Backstreet Cafe, Trevisio and Hugo's (and our own Best of Houston® winner this year for Best Sommelier), has been recognized for more than just his wine skills by Wine Enthusiast. The magazine paid tribute to his notable bartending chops as well, naming Beck their "Mixologist of the Month."
The Businessmakers: In a little deviation from the regular blog posts we feature around here, Esther Steinfeld Freedman interviews the Eatsie Boys -- Ryan Soroka, Alex Vassilakidis and Matt Marcus -- in a podcast about their food truck/ice cream truck hybrid of awesome and their upcoming project, 8th Wonder Brewery.
Chicken Fried Texas: With excellent weather headed our way, it's no better time to head east to La Porte, where you can kill two birds with one stone and visit two Houston landmarks in one afternoon: the San Jacinto Monument and Monument Inn. (I suppose you can also see the Battleship Texas while you're there.) That's what Chicken Fried Texas did, and came back with a fair-to-middling report on Monument Inn's CFS. I recommend sticking with the excellent fried shrimp, though.
Jack Tyler Dines: I love Jack's posts because I always learn so much about restaurants that don't often get the mainstream attention they deserve. Case in point with his most recent post is the backstory on Fratelli's Authentic Italian Cuisine and its chef, Teresa Tadeo Wittman, who is originally from Veracruz but draws on her many travels to Italy to create Fratelli's food.
The Mija Chronicles: We all photograph our food these days, but how many of us stop to admire the utensils and instruments that create that food? This short post from Lesley is a refreshing, momentary pause and a look at two of her most important tools: her molcajete and metate.
