Fast Times: Burger King BK Chef's Choice Burger

When it comes to the Burger King BK Chef's Choice Burger ($5) there's good news, and there's bad news. The good news is that it's exactly what the advertised description promises: 5.5 ounces of burger patty (USDA-certified ground chuck!) seasoned with salt and pepper, American cheese, naturally-smoked thick-cut bacon, fresh romaine lettuce, red onions, ripe tomatoes, and grill sauce on an artisinal bun. The bad news is that the burger is typical Burger King--overcooked, dry, and mealy.

It's a real shame, too because this burger actually looks kind of beautiful.

When I opened up the take-out box my husband brought home, my hopes were high for this fast food promotional burger. I'm not sure why, after my recent California Whopper debacle, I expected more from the Chef's Choice Burger. I admit, I liked the look of this thing. There was lots of cheese and not too much of the "grill sauce" (and it wasn't plain mayo -- score), and while the tomato looked a little anemic, overall the toppings seemed fresh and plentiful.

Unfortunately, the concept falls apart, as you can see in the cross-section. The burger is so unbelievably dry, and then ends up being flavorless to boot. Sure, it's well-seasoned, but -- pardon the pun -- where's the beef flavor? I don't see the point of offering a "premium" burger, dressing it up with a nice bun and bacon and veggies, and then putting a dried out little beef disc on there.

Yet another BK Fast Times fail.

I liked the breakfast I picked up a few months ago. So far lunch/dinner items are a strike-out.

Probably why Wendy's just knocked them out of spot #2 for the first time in 30+ years.

everything they make is gross. I still have the taste of BK onion rings in my mouth from 1987,
