Upcoming Events: Galveston Gets Craft Beer and Its Own Restaurant Week

Categories: Leftovers

Have you marked off next Thursday, December 15, in your calendar? Good, because the RSVP list for our Tequila & Tamales event is filling up fast. As with Wingtoberfest, the Tequila & Tamales tasting is free to the public, but it's also first-come, first-served. The first 200 guests will receive tasting sheets for all six restaurants and tokens which they'll use to vote on their favorite tamale and favorite tequila cocktail of the night.

So which restaurants will be there? Here's the final list of competitors:

  • El Gran Malo
  • TQLA
  • Berryhill Tamales
  • Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen
  • Pico's Mex-Mex
  • Xuco Xicana (El XX)

Each guest will receive a tamale and a 3-ounce cocktail sample from the competing restaurant, so all attendees must be at least 21 years old. The event starts at 6 p.m. sharp at El XX and winners will be announced at 8 p.m., so stick around and enjoy the evening-long happy hour after you've scarfed down all those tamales.

This Saturday, get the kids out of the house and enjoy the crisp, clear weather before it starts raining again on Sunday. Head down to Market Square Park downtown, where they'll be hosting the 3rd annual Gingerbread Build-Off starting at 10 a.m. Thirty-six teams will compete for the big Grand Prix de Show award, with winners and select competitors featured in a one-week exhibition at the Architecture Center Houston. Winning gingerbread structures will be announced prior to the end of the event at 4 p.m.

Attention Galveston (and Clear Lake, Webster, League City, etc.) residents: Two great events are coming soon, including one this Thursday, December 15. If you're more of a craft beer connoisseur than a Tequila & Tamales fan, meet your new best friends: The Pint Jockeys, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of craft beer in the Victoria, Beaumont and Galveston areas. The new club will be hosting a free tasting event on Thursday at the Del Papa Distribution on 6702 Broadway, featuring beers from Magic Hat, Pyramid, Rahr & Sons, Leffe and more.

Next month, the entire island will be gearing up for the first ever Galveston Restaurant Week, which will take place from January 15 to January 21. Unlike Houston Restaurant Week, the Galveston version features restaurants offering an array of price points, from $10 to $40 for a meal. A full list of participating restaurants -- including EOW favorites Olympia at Pier 21, Tremont Cafe and 901 Post Office -- can be found on the event's website.

Last but not least, The Ginger Man Pub is having its annual holiday beer tasting and dinner on Saturday, December 17. For $35, you'll taste an array of Christmas ales along with dinner from chef Angela Gaspard. Reservations are required; call 713-526-2770 to book your spot.

Just a note about the Pint Jockeys.  They are not a consumer based group, but an arm of AB-INBEV distriutor Del Papa's that promotes the craft beer that they carry (which is why you see the beer listed).

Interesting! I was wondering why this was being held at Del Papa's.
