Upcoming Events: Tequila & Tamales and Green Beans & Guacamole
At this weekend's Eastside Farmers Market, Urban Harvest will be hosting a citrus tasting in advance of its yearly fruit tree sale. More than 30 different varieties of citrus trees grow in Houston, and you're invited to taste them all this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. If you find a few you like, you can purchase the trees themselves at the upcoming fruit tree sale on January 14.
Also this Saturday, Pondicheri is hosting its first Pondi Bazaar. Starting at 10 a.m. on the patio, the bazaar will feature a selection of artisanal jewelry and textiles straight from India via local importer Mala. Breakfast starts serving at 7:30 a.m., so fill your belly with uppma then get to some holiday shopping right outside.
The next day, an assortment of Houston chefs will gather at Sorrel Urban Bistro for a signing of new Houston cookbook Green Beans and Guacamole. The book contains 100 recipes from some of the city's most popular chefs and restaurants, such as Le Mistral's roasted Chilean sea bass and Haven's wild Gulf shrimp corndogs. Proceeds from the sale of the book go to benefit Arc, an organization dedicated to helping people with intellectual developmental disabilities. The book signing will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 4.
Next Wednesday night, put on your finest flapper attire and head over to Pondicheri's neighbor at West Ave -- Saint Genevieve -- where the new cocktail bar will be celebrating the 78th anniversary of the repeal of the 18th Amendment, better known as the end of the Prohibition. From 7 to 10 p.m., the bar will feature whiskey, bourbon and port wine tastings and live music by the Good Luck Trio. Admission is $10, with proceeds going to the Lupus Foundation of Houston.
That same night, Ziggy's Bar & Grill will be hosting a No Label beer dinner -- keeping that Houston Beer Week spirit alive! -- at its downtown location on Main Street. The five-course dinner will be paired with standard No Label beers like Black Wit-O and two special, private reserve beers that will never be released to the public except for this one dinner on December 7. The cost is a very reasonable $50 (excluding tax and tip) and reservations can be made at 713-527-8588.
And a reminder that our big Tequila & Tamales event is taking place on Thursday, December 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at El XX (a.k.a. Xuco Xicana). Six different restaurants -- including El Gran Malo, TQLA, Pico's Mex-Mex and Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen -- will be pitting their tamales and tequila concoctions against one another, and you're the judges. The event is free, but limited to the first 200 guests (over the age of 21, please). Those guests will get one tamale and one three-ounce tequila cocktail from each restaurant, along with voting chips to choose their favorite. The winners will be announced at 8 p.m., so be sure to stick around for the whole thing.
