Coming soon to a brick-and-mortar restaurant.
Christmas comes early this year for fans of the Austin-based Torchy's Tacos. The Houston location is opening at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7, in the former location of Greatfull Taco at 2411 S. Shepherd.

It's Torchy's first entry into the Houston market. The taco chain was founded by Michael Rypka in 2006 and now counts eight Austin locations and one Dallas location under its belt five years later. Long before the now-closed Greatfull Taco was wowing customers with its "gourmet" tacos, Torchy's pioneered the singularly Texan twist on the popular street food with creations like the Dirty Sanchez, with scrambled eggs, fried poblano chile, guacamole, escabeche carrots and shredded cheese.

Other favorites at Torchy's include the Fried Avocado taco with vegetarian refried beans and the Brush Fire with Jamaican jerk chicken, grilled jalapenos, mango, sour cream and cilantro. The chain has now expanded to also serve sides and desserts like a green chile-studded queso and deep-fried chocolate chip cookies with powdered sugar and cherries.

Torchy's tacos are as gringo as they come, but they're also delicioso.
Torchy's has something in common with another Montrose restaurant that's opening soon: Uchi. Both are from Austin and both -- despite their out-of-town origins -- have a huge Houston following. Torchy's Tacos could potentially be the restaurant that finally breaks the curse at 2411 S. Shepherd after a string of failed restaurants in that location: Greatfull Taco, Sabetta, Cafe Zol and Crostini, just to name a few.

Hours at the Houston location will be the same as at other Torchy's, starting at 7 a.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. on the weekends. Longtime GM Forrest Harrell will be handling the operations here, giving Torchy's the advantage of [hopefully] running smoothly right from the start.

Want to attend the grand opening on December 6, before the public unveiling? Follow Torchy's blog for more information on how to win tickets to its "Texas-sized taco kickoff."

i feel like this location will work just because it is torchy's. people will go out of their way to eat it because it is so hyped (and for good reason). bring on the dublin dr pepper fountain and green chile queso

Thanks for the ban folks. Continue on with the circle-jerking and cheerleading.

Torchy's is great. I never said it wasn't. There aren't people here confusing Torchy's and Gratfull Taco like your twitter inaccurately states. Yes, being Texans we shouldn't give a shit about tacos that makes sense. We should probably also stop caring about biscuits and gravy (Shilcutt throat lube), Fried Chicken, BBQ, and bean-less chili.

The thing we should care the most about is boring and predictable reviews by hack food reviewers.

Agreed and understood. I simply was condensing the whole shitstorm that resulted because of a new taco house review.TA

I'm with Terry on this one. For crying out loud go enjoy the food. This isn't molecular foodie hijinks, they're just kick ass tacos that taste good. If you haven't tried them STFU and quit acting like an anonymous fool on HP.

It's tacos, people. I can't recall any instance that a freakin' taco has ever caused such a response. It's a damn taco. TA

You are crazy if you aren't going to give Torchy's a chance! Their tacos are amazing - look at any review in Austin! They grew from one food trailer to six locations and growing. You will love all of their taco creations - vegan friendly options too!!

GUYS. Hai, guys.

This comment thread is getting way off track. I'm going to close it down and force everyone to simmer unless we can get off the Greatfull Taco hate -- it's closed anyway! who cares? -- and back to Torchy's.

And, yes. Torchy's paid me ONE HUNDRED THOUSANDS TACOS to write this. I'm eating them as I type this. /sarcasm

And all the foodies in town will run to taco trucks where they can feel like better people for buying tacos from authentic brown people.

Astroturf tacos?
Astroturf tacos?

I'm a native Houstonian. It's going take a fuck of a lot to "WOW" me with a taco.

Hold on a second... Is this a press release that has been reprinted verbatim?

two Austin transplants we don't need here. we have great tacos, we have great sushi

but at least they're actually FROM Austin, unlike the Onion Creek family and Taco a Go Go who pose as though they're from Austin.

guess all the UT dropouts and frat boys will be happy

Gratefull Taco wowed no one but your sole gaping maw, Shillcutt. You were the only one flying flags for that sub-par dump. I don't know why it wooed you so much perhaps they slathered everything in mayo just how you love it. The place didn't work out because they were junk tacos that tried too hard and missed yet you still gobbled (lol topical) them down and kept waving the flag like it was the K'Naan world cup song.

I've never been to Torchy's so I'm anxious to try it here. One question: does/will they sell alcohol? I haven't seen it mentioned and the website doesn't either.

When the ShitThrowingMonkey is the voice of reason, you know the thread has jumped the shark. Now we just need some inane reviewers to say " we like me some whatever"! STOP SAYING"I LIKE ME SOME"! Ultimate hack!

the last time I saw a crowd at that location was when it was a Monterrey House back in the 80's, miss that place....

and it's not even a review, per se... it's just a "hey there's a new restaurant opening soon" - not a review.

They are AWESOME!!!! People will soon see that they aren't your average taco. In some ways, it might be a stretch to call them Mexican food... They are more like, imagination on a tortilla....

@Robert  I think you should stuff a dick taco down your gaping trough and take the stick out of your ass and hit yourself over the head with it.  Regardless of your opinion of the place, she liked it as did I.  If you didn't like it, don't go.

Are you saying that you actually went there? Because as far as I know, that was their problem. No one else did.

That's nice, but... note that all I said was that people who hate Austin are stupid (Fact) and that Houston and Austin are great places.

I never mentioned Houston losing its identity, but I'd argue that part of Houston's identity is its lack thereof.

I'm glad no one asked my opinion of Dallas, because I think that place sucks.

I love Austin too, but I'm not exactly stoked whenever a transplant business comes into town. I love it when Austin stays in Austin, and Houston stays in Houston. This is true for all cities, it's like the independently owned version of all cities looking alike. We malign the practices that turn US cities into cut and paste strips of Denny's, Chili's, Waffle Houses and such. But if even the independent, non-corporate or what have you dining scene all blends together, then really what have you got left?

SirRon
SirRon

I can't figure out why I can't love both? Is everything that polar to you? Please... continue... I love this stuff, because I usually use it elsewhere.

then telecommute if you like it so much. god knows there are enough out of work IT specialists in Austin to hook your ass up

SirRon

Why? Someone pays me more to stay here. That outweighs having to share Houston, which is also a great place, with your dumb ass.

CONSPIRACY THEORISTS UNITE!! EOW BLOGGERS TAKE MONEY FROM RESTAURANTS THEN WRITE ABOUT IT!! NO REAL JOURNALISM HERE!! THIS IS THE CONSPIRACY THEORY! DO YOU BELIEVE IT?

well, this is a blog, so much of the journalistic integrity is out the window. but if you're a food truck owner, mixologist, hipster foodie who has opened a restaurant in the Heights or former HP food editor, you're practically guaranteed good reviews

it's clear that EOW has an agenda and promotes certain establishments to a fault

Corey

Overly harsh but he does have a point, watch for the precursor gushing a week or two beforehand, later comes the good/glowing review. It's all pretty obvious if you actually take the time to actually read these, and seems to be the norm rather than the exception. Has made me question the journalistic integrity here, or whether they're part of some journalistic clique paid off for a good review in what I thought was supposes to be an unbiased, unpaid for opinion. She/they don't like rebuttals they're definitely in the wrong business.

They actually do sell beer.... So that's something :)
