Fast Times: Chik-Fil-A Chargrilled Chicken Club

Lately I'm not sure which came first, the chicken or the egg--in which "the chicken" is my insatiable craving for hamburgers and "the egg" is Fast Times. Either way, I had to give myself a break this week and actually eat, uh, chicken. A girl can only eat so many hamburgers in a week. (And I'd already killed one each at Down House and Natachee's.)

My husband and I struck out for the newly renovated Chik-fil-A on the Southwest Freeway near Kirby. We only went through the drive-through, but it's looking pretty fancy.

In an attempt to keep things light I went for the Chargrilled Chicken Club. I crossed my fingers, hoping that it wouldn't top 600 calories. The Chargrilled Chicken Club layers a chicken breast, "marinated in special seasonings, grilled to perfection" with leafy lettuce, tomato, provolone, dill pickles, and smoked applewood bacon, all served up on a toasted wheat bun; a packet of Honey Roasted BBQ sauce is included, and best of all--no mayo! I heart Chik-fil-A.

Chik-fil-A really does chicken well. The only "seasoning" the chicken tastes like it was marinated in is "salt" but it's not salty to the point of being inedible, and compared to last week's completely underwhelming hamburger patty (Wendy's), the chicken is an improvement.

What really makes this sandwich a winner for me is the fresh toppings, as well as the dill pickle chips. The bun is soft and quite tasty, with a hint of sweetness I really enjoyed. The applewood bacon comes close to "amazing" in the texture category--not too stringy, not too hard--and you can actually taste the applewood smoke.

I am glad they serve the Honey Roasted BBQ on the side, because I found the texture odd--almost creamy--and the flavor was more honey and less BBQ; I would prefer honey mustard.

At a (relatively) figure-friendly 410 calories, the Chik-fil-A Chargrilled Club is a new personal favorite. Need to keep it lighter? The Chargrilled Chicken sandwich (no cheese or bacon) comes in under 300 calories.

now if only chik-fil-a's politics didn't leave behind such a bitter taste.

After reading your bit about Wendy's new hamburger, I decided to give it a try.  What piqued my interest is that you said Whataburger's burger was much better than Wendy's new burger.  Wendy's cheeseburger was a whopping $3.79--for the single. I had a BOGOF coupon so I got two.  Anyway, nice packaging, wrapped in paper.  Dry, dense meat, cottony bun.  Dressed with mustard and ketchup.  It sucked ace.  Whataburger is definitely better.  And I'm not a big fan of Whataburger.

"in which 'the chicken' is my insatiable craving for hamburgers"

Why do you write things like that?  It makes no sense.  You ordered a chicken sandwich.

Wendy's is Whataburgers Bitch. No competition. The only thing that even made it acceptable in the 90's was that salad and baked potato bar. TA

Bruce, I'm not used to you agreeing with me and I haven't had my coffee yet. That just about sent me over the edge.

So your single was also $3.80? I've been meaning to go back & check the price & patty situation, because that price also seemed high to me and then the appearance of the double patty in the photo had me curious. Maybe I'll roll through the drive thru today.

I think we've both learned a lot from this and going forward, will lead more productive lives.

Don't go back to Wendy's! Go to Whataburger and get the A.1. Thick & Hearty or the Chicken Strip sandwich, you won't regret it.
