Upcoming Events: Dinner and Drinks at Rudz

Until 1 p.m., some of the city's best food trucks will be fixing food for the masses: Hit 'N Run Killer Street Food, Eatsie Boys, Oh My Gogi, Juice Girl, The Lunch Bag, Mmm...Cupcake and Good Dog Hot Dogs will all be on hand, and Noel (at 2727 Southwest Freeway) has provided plenty of picnic tables to lunch at.
The food was gourmet and brilliantly conceived: truffle egg toasts, a celery soup with an amazing Bosque blue cheese from Houston Dairymaids that was paired with an unbelievably good Porter. There was even a perfectly braised lamb shank that was so big, the bone hung over the edge of the plate.
Another of Apa's brilliant (and brilliantly under-the-radar) dinners is coming up on September 29. In typical Rudz style, no dishes or beers have yet been announced, but something else interesting has: Bartenders from Anvil, 13 Celsius, Haven, Alto and Grand Prize will be on hand mixing cocktails. More drinks will be on hand -- this time for free! -- at The Barbed Rose Steakhouse if you make the short drive south to Alvin. The steakhouse is hosting an Intro to Wine course tomorrow, September 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. The class will feature six different wines (along with hors d'oeurves) and a training session for beginner oenophiles on how to taste wines. While it's free to attend, you'll need to call for reservations: 281-585-2272.
If you, like me, were disappointed to have missed Valentino's all-you-can-eat sashimi event last month, don't despair. The restaurant and its bar, Vin, are hosting another AYCE event next Thursday, September 15. Valentino will be creating a vast menu of tapas treats for the evening, which runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and costs only $25 a person. The menu includes something for everybody, too: seafood and vegetarian items are available, as are charcuterie and cheese dishes. Oh, and valet is free. Beat that.
