Fast Times: Whataburger Banana Pie and Banana Milkshake

Even though my last attempt at enjoying a limited-time-only Whataburger milkshake didn't thrill me, I had to return to try out their new Banana Shake. Bananas are serious comfort food for me, and after a particularly tough week I thought I deserved some serious (and fast) comfort food.

When I got to Whataburger I realized that in addition to the banana shake there was also a banana pie to be had -- sold. My medium shake and pie came to $3.98, and I headed home to enjoy my treats.

One thing I have to ask is -- what is the deal with the Whataburger straws? They are like cocktail stirrers: skinny, and with a very narrow opening. Considering the thickness of their shakes, Whataburger's skinny straws are not much good for immediate milkshake consumption. I popped the top of my shake and took a few sips as I drove home. The verdict? Yum. And, wow.

This is a delicious milkshake with a great banana flavor; even better, it's not sickly-sweet the way my earlier pineapple milkshake had been. The banana shake is flavored with a banana syrup, but the flavor is a rich combination of banana and vanilla that is perfect. Once the shake had time to melt and loosen up, it was also a beautiful, almost foamy consistency. A medium shake at Whataburger is quite substantial, so I didn't finish mine right away. Even after leaving the milkshake in the refrigerator for several hours it maintained an excellent thickness, and I enjoyed the rest of it late-night.

The banana pie was slightly less successful for me. On the plus side, I like that it's a fried pastry -- like the old-school McDonald's pies -- but the banana custard on the inside was just okay. I reheated mine in the oven to get the outside crisp, so the textures held up well, but the warm banana flavoring isn't as successful as it is in the cold milkshake. I think adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the pie might go a long way, and I plan on returning to Whataburger to test that theory out.

That banana pie looks like someone at Whataburger spooned some Gerber's pureed banana in there.

That straw thing must be a fluke or misship because Whataburger straws are usually not thin and are white with orange stripes.

Funny you should say that, Jeff. I did think it had a baby food-esque quality. But I like banana baby food, so that's not necessarily a bad thing.
