Expedition Egg Salad: Barnaby's Cafe

Bacon. Who knew?
I've become obsessed with egg salad, which is a little weird, because I can remember a time in my life when I hated both eggs and mayonnaise. Go figure.

My post on The Far Down at The Hobbit Cafe prompted a reader tip about Nielsen's, purveyor of another praiseworthy egg salad sandwich. (P.S. to commenter FattyFatBastard, I haven't yet smooshed four of their deviled eggs with bread to make my own sammie. Yet.)

But even though now I have at least two Houston options for great egg salad, I still want more. Hence my recent trip to Barnaby's.

When I examined my sandwich I found lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and bacon? Hmm, that wasn't on the menu description. Not that I'm complaining, as bacon usually makes everything better.

Consisting only of eggs, mayonnaise, and a bit of pepper, the egg salad itself was a bit bland. The two long strips of bacon, though not particularly fresh, added some welcome porcine savoriness. With that enhancement plus the acidic red onions, sweet juicy tomatoes, and nutty wheat bread, the overall flavor was more than decent. If the bacon had been a little hotter, greasier, and softer (sorry, don't think that food tastes better overcooked), the sandwich would get two thumbs up.

Various little birds have told me that I should also try the egg salad at Brown Bag Deli and Kenny and Ziggy's. Readers, any other establishments you recommend?

This sounds crazy, but the best egg salad sandwhich i've ever had... Anadarko Tower Cafeteria.  They put parsley and seasoning in it and since served in an employee cafeteria, it was dirt cheap. Haven't found a replacement yet, and i refuse to pay as much for egg salad as deli meat sandwhich... I'm smart enought to know there is a large economic difference between the two. Luckily its super simple to just make at home!!

Hmm.  I think you need to try 5 places and then rank them.  My only suggestion would be either:  Smushed eggs at Neilson's, or my go to for sammies which is Spec's.

Vinoteca Poscol does a small plate featuring egg salad sandwiches.  It's odd in the context, but I crave them as soon as I walk in the door there.

Reading about egg salad sandwiches just reminds me of "What's Up, Tiger Lily?"  Anyone else feel the same way?

EOW must pay you handsomely if you can afford to eat at Kenny and Ziggy's.  I think $11 for an egg salad sandwich is a bit high, as is $3 for an iced tea.  But the sandwich does come with a side of slaw, so that does sweeten the deal.

Next time ask for them to toast the bread.  So much better.

Nielsen's is good but extremely proud of their food, as evidenced by their ridiculous prices.  I like that they advertised $2.95 for a dixie cup of potato salad and you get this tiny flimsy little cup of potato salad.  Good? yes, pricey? uh yeah.  $10+ for a "jr" sandwich and potato salad is a bit ridiculous.

Nielsen's Deli is good, but I haven't tried nearly enough places to call it best.

I cant believe I am recommending this dump, but Murphys Deli has pretty good egg salad.

DaCapo's has great egg salad.  You can get it as a sandwich or a salad.

I believe you. The Exxon cafeteria downtown on Bell Street makes some tremendous dishes from time to time, like a black quinoa and barley salad. Who'd have thought?

Yikes, $11 is high for an egg salad. Will have to save some extra pennies for that one.

Btw, EOW pays me fair and square. My extra moolah comes from my lucrative crochet potholder business.

Really? Huh. Went once, not impressed (with other sandwich).
