Happy Hour Scene: Coaches Pub

The Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day

The Scene: It's a Thursday afternoon and a curious amount of golf fans are gathered inside of this Midtown bar at Louisiana and Webster. Flanked by Darque Tan on one side and Gotham Pizza on the other, about ten dudes have decided that it's too blazing outside to work on their man-tan lines and/or tear apart a hot pie.

Instead, with the Golf Channel's Bridgestone Invitational at a loud but comfortable volume, several men groan as Tiger Woods botches an attempt at birdie. Moments later, strangers united by the "gentleman only, ladies forbidden" sport discuss the proceedings of the tournament's opening-round play. One "gentleman only," in order to further illustrate a point, performs "air putter."

Ladies, at least at 1 p.m. on a Thursday, are either forbidden or just invisible at Coaches. Instead, a variety of men -- most who wear polo-type shirts, khaki shorts and golf caps -- congregate at the pub's inviting dark-wood bar. There's nary a soul in the spacious and feng shui'd dining room that includes a potent display of architectural black-and-white photos as well as visual odes to the Astros and Dynamo.

Coaches' non-trashy approach places an emphasis on an upscale-esque sports watching experience. As a result, today's clientele doesn't seem to contain any daytime drunks. Everyone is comfortable, relaxed and no beer muscles seem to flexed.

Food-wise, there aren't any happy-hour deals, but there are lunch and chef specials, such as chicken pasta salad and a one-third pound burger, that are pub-grub standbys.

After a few minutes, a woman finally appears. It's Coaches' lone bartender, who has to be at least 20 to 25 years everybody's junior.

Just like what happened after Tiger missed his putt, there's a chorus of groans. Only this time, it's silent.
