Openings & Closings
The big news this week, of course, was that Randy Rucker is packing up and moving to Houston. Bootsie's will still operate in Tomball under his mother's stewardship, but his new restaurant will be a partnership with pastry chef Chris Leung, located at 5219 Caroline in the Museum District.
In other chef news, Brandon Fisch left his position as executive chef at Yelapa, just as the restaurant was beginning to garner a glut of positive reviews again after chef L.J. Wiley's departure late last year. The split, while amicable, didn't seem to be anticipated by either chef or restaurant. For now, Fisch can be found cooking steaks at Mugsy's on Monday nights, however, and lending a hand at The Modular. Coincidentally, The Modular is also where Lyle Bento -- former sous chef at Feast -- has ended up as well.
Across town, Mai Pham brought us a first look (along with some truly fab photos) of Sorrel Urban Bistro, which opened this week with a menu of daily specials, craft beer and wine on tap.
Up in The Woodlands, Albert Nurick reports on a new burger place from the same owners of Grimaldi's Pizza. As with the New York-style pizzas at Grimaldi's, the burgers at Coal Burger are -- you guessed it -- grilled in a coal-fired oven.
In restaurant closings, B4-U-Eat reported a short but sweet list this week in their newsletter: Extreme Pita, Starfire Grille and the Memorial location of BYOB place La Vista. We'll always have Fountainview...
