Greatest Grub: Best Non-Blue Bell Ice Cream Flavors

As promised, here's the follow up to the last Greatest Grub featuring favorite flavors of Blue Bell ice cream. I can only imagine how many gallons of that stuff are bought in the state during these unbearably hot summer months. I know that Blue Bell is the hometown favorite brand, but you Texans must admit that there are some damn fine ice creams that are made outside of your beloved state. Being a Vermonter, I may be shunned if I didn't choose a Ben & Jerry's flavor. Luckily, my favorite is, in fact, made in the Green Mountain State. But, are others on the B&J bandwagon or are there other greats out there?

From Eating Our Words:
Stacy Zane
Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie

My childhood in a pint. I can't tell you how many times my mother would find me passed out on the couch, with my Wee Sing in Sillyville tape on, and a whole mess of chocolate covering my face. Creamy chocolate ice cream with chunks of chewy fudgy brownies? Say no more! And guess what else I learned? The brownies come from Greyston Bakery which provides employment & training to economically disadvantaged residents of Yonkers, NY. So, see? Get fat and help people at the same time! Stuffing for your face = good deeds.

Me
Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Chocolate Chunk

I have eaten mass quantities of Ben & Jerry's in my day, making it very difficult for me to choose a favorite. Chubby Hubby, Mint Chocolate Chunk, and Chunky Monkey all rank highly in my book, but when I came across Oatmeal Chocolate Chunk a while back, I knew I'd found ice cream perfection. Cinnamon ice cream with hunks of soft oatmeal cookies and chocolate chunks is bliss in a pint. Speaking of, the pint is another plus in Ben & Jerry's corner. It's so easy to save yourself from washing a bowl by just snuggling up on the couch with the pint. But, beware! A pint of Oatmeal Chocolate Chunk can easily disappear in one sitting!

The Word on the Street:
Dave
Haagen Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter

Dave claims that this is "the best ice cream out there." A chocolate base with thick swirls of peanut butter, it does look delicious!

Janine
So Delicious Coconut Almond Chip

Due to a lactose intolerance, Janine eats coconut milk based ice cream these days. "The best milk alternative ice cream I've found is So Delicious' Coconut Almont Chip," she says. "It can hold up to any regular ice cream."

Do you have a great that wasn't on our radars or a fantastic non-milk alternative? Let's hear it! There's no such thing as too much ice cream!

I have not eaten anything better than  B&J Willie Nelson's Country Peach Cobbler...found it at HEB.  I could eat the whole thing in one sitting.  Of course this was when I was 7 months pregnant.  Peach ice cream with little shortbread cookies smooshed up in it.  Heaven.  It was totally worth the scolding I got from my OB that week.

Clearly you people are ignorant of the glory of Graeter's ice cream. Yes, $5 is entirely too much to pay for a pint of supermarket ice cream, but it is so smooth, creamy and rich tasting. If I had to pick one, it would be black raspberry chip. And now I have something to do this afternoon...

While I agree black raspberry chip might be the best, and anything with chocolate chunks by Graeters is superior, Peach shouldn't be overlooked.  I need to check and see if Krogers is carrying it as a seasonal flavor. And unfortunately, they just don't taste quite as good prepackaged as scooped straight from the Graeter's store, but still pretty freakin' amazing.

Haagen Dazs Chocolate Chocolate Chip.  But I'm certainly not an authority on this blog.

Has anybody tried those greatly marketed new to US Magnum (teeehehehe) bars? I looked for them recently at Disco Kroger but the shelf was all out so I'm guessing they're all that?

This is a European bar. Wonder if it's as good here as in the UK?

I've always loved Baskin-Robbins Mint Chocolate Chip. Whenever anyone else tries to do mint it ends up tasting like toofpaste.

Agreed, along with Americone Dream. Chocolate-dipped waffle cone chunks!

My favorite is sort of an alternative... It is La Loo's Deep Chocolate, a goat's milk ice cream and the most chocolaty tasting ice cream I have found.  Made using Scharffen Berger dark chocolate, I'm recommending this only to those who love dark chocolate.

I like their other flavors as well... cajeta anyone?  My only exception is the Rupplemint.. bleh, but I do not like mint ice cream in general.

I just remembered! (Thanks to Dave) - I totally have another favorite that I'd probably put ABOVE B&J's Chocolate Fudge Brownie - it's the peanut butter n' chocolate from Baskin Robbins! It will change your life.
