Former Tony's Chef Bruce McMillian Charged with Sexual Assault of a Minor

Although owner Jeff Vallone cited "a tough economy" when Amici closed in late last year, it appears that something much more sinister could be behind the Sugar Land restaurant's closing.

Former chef Bruce McMillian is planning an insanity defense to charges of sexual assault of a child.

McMillian, 49, was arrested in Fort Bend County in January, one month after Amici's closing, and charged with two counts of sexual assault, one count of indecency with a child (including sexual contact); and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, Fort Bend County district court records show. No details were available regarding the connection between the boy and McMillian, or where the alleged incidents occurred.

Court records allege that McMillian performed oral sex on the boy on multiple occasions between October 2007 and November 2009, and that other sexual contact occurred between December 2008 and June 2010.

A jury trial has been set for August 29.

A judge denied three motions to reduce bond, but the court accepted his claim of indigency and appointed defense attorney Eric Ashford in February. Ashford was unavailable for comment.

McMillian was the executive chef of the upscale Tony's, a Houston institution, for ten years before opening Amici in Sugar Land.

McMillian filed a notice July 11 of his intent to raise the insanity defense, simultaneously asking the court to provide a mental health expert to evaluate whether he "was insane at the time the offense was committed."

Prosecutor Lisa Gregg was unavailable for comment.

No there was nothing sinister or related to this, otherwise Jeff Vallone wouldn't have stiff his vendors for thousand and thousands of dollars.. ya -- he just went out of business with a bang.

within the last year I had a two hour long conversation with this man... we had a long talk about morality.. the dude is heartless

I worked with this man for a year and he never seemed "insane" to me. What a B.S excuse for comitting an unthinkable crime. If it happened once then MAYBE I could possibly buy an insanity plea...but this happened multiple times over a number of years. What am I saying...he's a sick man who needs to be locked away and given years of therapy.

I realize that the Press chose to run the article in the Restaurant News section, but it seems like a strange topic for this area, regardless of the fact that Bruce is a chef. I suggest paying attention to Lynda's suggestion of the fundraiser for the Children's Assessment Center at Boheme tomorrow night.

Why would they welcome him back after he attended treatment??? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.  Im sure they are creeped out and want to stay as far away from this as possible and rightly so.  Who in their right mind would want a chef who has been sexually assaulting children forever?

Regardless of how this turns out, it is a tragedy for everyone of every age involved. I am so sorry to read about it.

He was also the executive chef at the Stand Up for Houston's Children gala last year. All the $ from the event went to help stop the trafficking and exploitation of children.

I hope there is a special place in hell for chef Bruce.

It will be interesting to see how the Vallone Group, master strokers of the press, handles this. Of course, they've stayed silent so far, though this rumor has been out there publicly since early April.

Bruce is a guy who has served the Vallone organization for decades. It would be at least charitable if they were to say that they regret his insanity, and the behavior that it produced, and that they would welcome him back to Tony's after a successful course of treatment.

Sounds sorta like that "too-good-to-pass-up-offer" they got to shutter Caffe Bello recently....the one unthinkingly regurgitated by most Houston media.

Yeah, it was cross-posted from the news blog. So was the story about the Bernie's Burger Bus employee's murder.

So are you saying that pedophilia cannot be treated? Is it an involuntary medical condition....or a willful manifestation of evil?

He has chosen to raise an insanity plea! This is a clear admission of guilt sir. Please stick to yelp, your food blog, and your Facebook account.Due process??Are you out of your ever loving foodie doosh mind?

Yeah that's right.
Yeah that's right.

Seems like he's admitting it, just claiming he was insane at the time.

Me too.  Worked with him for years. Was always creepy.  This is sad but NOT surprising.

Tedious internet explaining.
Tedious internet explaining.

It's both. Most child molesters are just opportunistic abusers. They don't have any special attraction to children, they just find them easy prey. Some are actual pedophiles (which is involuntary in the sense that they didn't deliberately choose to be attracted to children, and the state of being a pedophile is itself not a crime) but don't have the impulse control or moral code to keep from acting on it.

no, not sure about this claim. how do you know that's right?

i mean if Bachmann's hubby can 'cure' gays through prayer, maybe he could help the peds....

That's a little wishy-washy. Maybe pedophiles are like those who suffer from Tourette's syndrome, and lack a similar control and moral code to stop acting out.
