100 Favorite Dishes: No. 92, Black Bean Burger from Natachee's

This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.

The black bean burger at Natachee's Supper 'n Punch was the first item I liked at the restaurant, which opened late last year along the "Best Block in Houston." And as much as I enjoyed that black bean burger, I didn't like anything else. It came as quite a surprise for a few reasons.

First, I expected a treasure trove of well-made Southern delicacies -- fried okra, peach cobbler, macaroni and cheese -- from the down-home restaurant with a horse tied out back. And second, I certainly didn't expect a vegetarian item to be the best thing on such a meat-heavy menu.

But there it was: a patty made from a melange of black beans, rolled oats, red peppers, corn and cilantro, underneath several heavy slices of buttery avocado. Cozied between two sweet, eggy buns, it was a delight -- and one that I still enjoy to this day.

Happily, the rest of the food at Natachee's has improved to match the black bean burger, and I'll now recommend that you finish off that burger with a piece of sweet potato pie and a cool glass of Sucker Punch.

The list so far:

No. 100: Dumplings at Heights Asian Cafe
No. 99: Mixta Pizza at Friends Pizzeria
No. 98: Veggie tacos from Radical Eats
No. 97: Bean pie from Conscious Cafe
No. 96: Swiss chard crepes from Giacomo's Cibo e Vino
No. 95: Eggs Mia Bella at Mia Bella
No. 94: Mulligatawny soup at the Queen Vic
No. 93: Helado de Lúcuma from Pollo Bravo

Haven't tried this burger, but the nut burger at Beavers is very good.  I like to add the fried egg.

I didn't love it. I enjoy a good black bean burger, but it didn't have a whole lot of flavor and had the mouth feel of really dry peanut butter. I wanted to like it, but did not. Not as good as a machine-made Morningstar Spicy Black Bean Patty. My parents love Natachee's, though. It's a good place to take your country parents.
