La Plaza's Huevos Rancheros

Have you really ever eaten bad huevos rancheros? I haven't. It typically comes down either a "very good" or "damn fine" ranking. La Plaza Mexican Restaurant's take on this Tex-Mex classic falls into the latter category.

For around $5, you get the picture above--two eggs over-easy, topped with that heavenly tomato chili sauce, and served alongside refried beans, shredded lettuce, and diced tomatoes. Add some fresh flour tortillas for mopping up the egg yolk/bean mixture, and you're in desayuno heaven.

My one complaint with the plate is the side of lettuce and tomatoes. It's pointless and typically gets scraped off. I wouldn't mind a papas fritas replacement.

The restaurant does not overdo the serving sizes. A heavy breakfast is never a good thing, so I appreciate the smaller portions that accompany the reasonable prices.

If you're flying solo and are in the mood for some quality entertainment, I highly recommend parking yourself at the counter. Watch the cook crank out breakfast after breakfast, only a few steps from your morning coffee. It's a comforting experience that's rare to find in our city.

One thing to note: La Plaza only accepts cash. No worries, you won't need much.

Actually, $5 is on the pricey side. For $3 I can get that dish served with fried potatoes and homemade corn tortillas.

I know, but I just couldn't resist, plus I knew you could handle it.

BTW, I've got a friend in need of a good Clear Lake restaurant recommendation. I'm all ears.

I thought you'd never ask. Here are my faves (not in any particular order):

Korean BBQ--go at lunch, get the spicy pork. Clear Lake is lucky to have this gem.

Cuisine of India--go at lunch--they serve a great buffet.

NASA Fast Food--Clear Lake's best banh mi, and dude's other items are also very good.

King Chicken--Excellent Peruvian style chicken and surprisingly good hamburgers. They also sell pupusas--get the mixta.

Rivera's Mex-Sal--Excellent Salvadoran and Tex-Mex. Their refried beans are great. The Honduran tacos are kind of fun.

Boondoggle's--this is Clear Lake's best beer joint, and the kitchen is above average. Their spinach salad is fantastic. So is the ceviche (but disregard the tortilla chips it's served with). Go on Thursday evening and get the crab legs.

Seabrook Classic Cafe--everything tastes homemade, mostly in a very good way.

Tokyo Bowl--they've been there a long time. Masa Sushi is also decent.

Perry's Steakhouse--if you go for lunch on Wednesday of Friday they'll hook you up with the biggest and best pork chop you've ever had for $12.

Lot's of people like Frenchies Italian. And Durango's serves Tex-Mex with some Yucatan dishes. I also like Market Seafood.

So there you go.

Thank you very much for this list. I really appreciate it! As does my friend.

Pretty much any taqueria that serves breakfast will beat that price. For $4.25 El Rey will give you heuvos rancheros, tortillas, beans, potatoes, and bacon. Arandas charges $2.49 for huevos rancheros, tortillas, and beans.

My favorite is La Favorita. It's on Spencer in South Houston. I think they charge $2.99 for heuvos, beans, potatoes, and awesome homemade corn tortillas. But I pay a little more and get the machacado a la Mexicana.

And Shilcutt turned me on to Honduras Maya. Awesome breakfast for $6 that includes coffee.

That's how much his mom charges him for breakfast.

Kevin, that's awfully close to a yo-mama joke.

Only accepts cash, not excepts.

I thought huevos rancheros were traditionally served atop a lightly fried corn tortilla or is that just a regional variation?

Correct you are...my apologies for the error.
