Keep on Truckin': Good Dog Hot Dog
This week, I found myself in the Heights for a Good Dog Hot Dog, where a friend and I ordered and sampled three of their dogs:
1. The Ol' Zapata Dog - bacon, caramelized onions, cheese, tomatoes, jalapeno relish, ketchup, and mayo.
2. The Guac-A-Dog - avocado slices, roasted garlic mayo, jalapenos, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, cumin, and lime.
3. The Chillin' Dog - chorizo based chili, diced onions, mustard, and pickled jalapenos.
I'm only here to talk about one though. And so I'll pick my favorite of the three - The Ol' Zapata Dog (Guac is a close second).
I'm not a huge hot dog aficionado. I like them, don't get me wrong, it's just that I never exactly find myself craving them. After Good Dog, however, that just might change.
The bun on this bad boy was phenomenal! Provided by Slow Dough Bread Co, it's lightly toasted with a generous brushing of butter. The taste is very similar to Texas Toast, actually. And quite delicious. I do like an even bun-to-dog ratio though and found myself tearing much of the breading off. Oh, well.
As for the dog, a mixture of beef and pork, it too was quite tasty -- very juicy, and every topping completely complemented the other. You would think that with seven toppings, it'd be a little much, and flavors would overshadow one another. Not the case here. You've got the salty crunchiness of the bacon, the spice from the jalapeno relish, the sweetness from the caramelized onions, and that savory cheese - a perfect mixture of flavors and textures.
