Keep on Truckin': Good Dog Hot Dog

GoodDog1.JPG
Each week I'll be visiting a different food truck and reviewing one of their items. Know of a particular food truck I should move to the top of my list? Let me know in the comments section.

This week, I found myself in the Heights for a Good Dog Hot Dog, where a friend and I ordered and sampled three of their dogs:

1. The Ol' Zapata Dog - bacon, caramelized onions, cheese, tomatoes, jalapeno relish, ketchup, and mayo.

2. The Guac-A-Dog - avocado slices, roasted garlic mayo, jalapenos, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, cumin, and lime.

3. The Chillin' Dog - chorizo based chili, diced onions, mustard, and pickled jalapenos.

I'm only here to talk about one though. And so I'll pick my favorite of the three - The Ol' Zapata Dog (Guac is a close second).

I'm not a huge hot dog aficionado. I like them, don't get me wrong, it's just that I never exactly find myself craving them. After Good Dog, however, that just might change.

The bun on this bad boy was phenomenal! Provided by Slow Dough Bread Co, it's lightly toasted with a generous brushing of butter. The taste is very similar to Texas Toast, actually. And quite delicious. I do like an even bun-to-dog ratio though and found myself tearing much of the breading off. Oh, well.

As for the dog, a mixture of beef and pork, it too was quite tasty -- very juicy, and every topping completely complemented the other. You would think that with seven toppings, it'd be a little much, and flavors would overshadow one another. Not the case here. You've got the salty crunchiness of the bacon, the spice from the jalapeno relish, the sweetness from the caramelized onions, and that savory cheese - a perfect mixture of flavors and textures.

Last week, EOW reader Ray had commented that Good Dog was "the best friggin hot dog" he had ever had. And Ray, I'm with you. It is delicious! Find out where the truck is by following them on Twitter or Facebook and skedaddle on over for a Good Dog. Try some of their bus-made chips too. You won't regret it.

I've had the Slaw Dog. Who would have through that an apple and sauerkraut slaw would be delicious on a hot dog? I do love me a good hot dog and they do have the best I've ever tasted. Especially with Slow Dough toasted buns. I mean, COME ON. Ridiculous.

You see. This is why Fuddrucker's frustrated me. With food like Good Dog out there which is locally made using local products, I will kill myself if you ever talk about Fuddrucker's again. Well, not really, but you know what I mean. The Ol' Zapata Dog was what I had the first time and you described it very well. The kombucha from Kickin Kombucha that Good Dog also sells is locally made and better than anything out there. This is just a great food truck. Glad you found them and enjoyed it. Now, on to Bernie's Burger Bus for a REAL burger.

I enjoy the freshness of the wieners they use.  First bite and they snap beautifully.

You have wisdom Ali. It is ridiculous how good they are.

That's my favorite one, too -- the sloppy slaw dog!

Admit it, I'm not the only one that thinks Ruddfucker's every time someone says Fuddrucker's and silently chuckles to myself.  (I'm a child.)

Oh please, Fuddrucker's makes a very good burger.  They are not polluting the masses, as you say.  Why the hatred of Fudd's.  What did they do to you?  I do not perceive them to be a giant corporation using unfair business practices to foist an inferior product on the masses.

What's wrong with talking/writing about Fuddrucker's?  Maybe not everyone shares your disdain for this establishment.

Do you know when they're going to be at Petrol?

I'm sending you to be the first to report on the new Fudruckers in the tunnels - 1110 Louisana.  I'm sure it's simply smashing!

It's what Fuddrucker's represents. Look, if someone wants to like them, fine, more power to you. How can I stop anybody? But look at what Anheuser-Busch did to our local craft breweries. Local business needs strong support because places like Fuddrucker's have polluted the masses and don't need publicity for what they call food. I believe there is only room for GOOD food that sustains the community it is in. There is too much junk out there polluting our bodies. It's about what we demand from the people that want our money. If a food blog is going to write about food, then go the extra mile. When business tries harder, you end up with places like Good Dog. And if you hate Bernie's I think I am going to cry. Anyway, this was a good write up and not just because I agree with you. I look forward to future non-Fuddrucker blogs. And no fast food battles either. lol. j/k.

Word. This is a mighty big world. I think there's plenty of room for ALL kinds of food. Even Fuddrucker's, which I maintain, has good burgers! And I've been to Bernies, but I'll reserve my thoughts for when/if I revisit them for a future Keep on Truckin'.

Ummm...not quite. I still like Fuddrucker's. But great conspiracy theory!

I'm no Sherlock Holmes, but I JUST clicked on your name and went to your personal blog and I say NO FRIGGIN' WAY that you think Fuddrucker's is good. Your entire blog is about the food that I root for! Except for the dog pics, ur blog over there is excellent! What is this Fuddrucker's business? Did HP put you up to it? You know exactly what I am talking about when it comes to food. You blogged about nothing but quality and local. Now I know why Shalin chimed in too. I knew that many people couldn't like Fuddrucker's. I call shenanigans! Tomfoolery! I thought I was going nuts because everyone I talked to hates Fuddrucker's unless they are with their kids. Whew. Mystery solved. WINNING!

I see what you're saying, but I don't really categorize Fuddruckers like that. There food is fresh and really tasty. Now, other generic chains are different - using frozen patties and what not. The quality and the care aren't there. But for a big chain restaurant, Fuddruckers actually gets it right in my opinion.

That's too late for me.  Way too late.
