Off the Wall: Is El Rey's Breakfast the Real Deal?

Last week, we introduced the Favorite Three entry. It featured various EOW bloggers' opinions on favorite breakfast spots. El Rey Taqueria ranked #3 for Katharine Shilcutt. One reader, ShitThowingMonkey, took great offense to this: "As a self-proclaimed expert on the subject, I think all breakfast tacos at El Rey, save the bacon and egg, are shit. Very weird, because I think most of their lunch/dinner tacos are very good. I like to get the Tres Amigos taco plate and mix it up."

To El Rey I went. I ordered two sausage, egg, bean and cheese tacos with a small coffee. The coffee was excellent -- strong enough to say "good morning," but not so powerful that I got the jitters. I'd order it again in a rapid heartbeat.

My breakfast tacos were good, not great, but certainly not "shit," as described by ShitThowingMonkey. There wasn't much to complain about with the filling--the meat, egg and cheese were quite tasty and plentiful. But the tortilla was off. It was a little thick for my preference and didn't have that homemade, just prepared taste to it.

Don't get me wrong, I'd get these tacos again, but given that Alamo Tamale Factory is closer to my work, I'll probably stick with that.

Here's something that shouldn't be overlooked. The El Rey on Ella has a drive-thru. This scores big points in my book. If you're in a hurry, or have kids, or both, quality drive-thru eating establishments like El Rey are heaven-sent.

The tortillas get hard cause there's too much grease/lard/oil in them. They shouldn't have darker "stains" in them if done correctly. Look to Original Ninfas, Teotihuacan and El Real for examples of poorly made tortillas.

Here's the trick at El Rey: Don't use the drive-thru at the Shepherd location. Go inside and order two chorizo tacos with beans (no cheese!) on flour and a double latte. Sit at the bar. Smother your tacos in salsa verde -- the latte helps calm the burn -- and enjoy awesome people-watching and even better breakfast tacos.

El Rey's lunch and dinner fare is much better than their breakfast. Now that I live in Memorial, the closest El Rey to me is the one in the mega strip-center on Bunker Hill. Judging by their prices, they really need to take the "Taqueria" out of their name. I have not been by the other two locations in a while, but the one by me is ridiculously over-priced...

Thanks Kevin for expanding on the topic. You definitely loaded up on the breakfast taquitos. I'm usually a minimalist, ordering some kind of meat with egg or the huevos a la mexicana with no extra fillings. I can imagine the beans and cheese would add flavor to the chorizo and huevos a la mexicana that I found bland. The bacon and egg taco is pretty good though. However, with so many options in the area, I personally would not recommend someone go to El Rey for breakfast tacos unless they really needed a drive through.

If the Ella drive-thru is anything like the Shepherd drive-thru, you're better off going inside.

Speaking of pricey tacos, I really like La Mexicana's breakfast tacos. Flour tortillas just like 'Lita used to make : )

Now that I think of it, Maria's Tacos, about three minutes away on Ella, serves up a nice breakfast taco.

I love La Mex but I've noticed a tendency for those tortillas to get tough and dried out really quickly. They've even served them to me that way, already rock hard. :(

Serving them to you that way...would definitely be a deal breaker if not remedied on the spot, but why would they even serve them like that?

The flour tortillas that I like the most tend to toughen up the quickest. Gotta eat em while they're hot : ) I'm no cook, so I have no idea why that is.
