On the Menu: A Good OMG at Sabine River Café

I recently sampled some of Sabine River Café's newest menu items at a media dinner. The restaurant is now offering seven new entrees and three desserts. Some of the additions include the Monterrey Chicken, King Ranch Chicken Casserole, Steak Laffite, and French Quarter Praline Cheesecake. I ended up trying the Steak Lafitte, Ooh La La Pasta, and a dessert I'll get to in a moment.

The Steak Lafitte ($14.99) hit the spot. Medium-rare beef medallions were soaked in a sangria mushroom demi-glaze, topped with a chipotle hollandaise, and served alongside some mashed potatoes. The dish was beautiful and well-executed. The steak needed an extra minute or two on the grill, but it was flavorful and tender. A small bite of the meat, dipped in the demi-glaze and chased with some mashed potatoes, made for a good meal. This was an excellent dish that I would not hesitate to order again.

The Ooh La La Pasta--consisting of bow tie pasta tossed with crawfish, Monterey Jack cheese, and a jalapeno sauce--missed the mark a bit. It was more like a side of macaroni and cheese. An addition of peas, for example, would have made this feel more like an entrée and look more appealing. I will say the crawfish were not overcooked and very tasty.

I just couldn't help myself with dessert. I passed on some of the newer options and went with the "OMG" Four Layer Chocolate Cake. While the pasta may not have been "ooh la la" worthy, this cake sure as hell was an "OMG." That's exactly what you'll say when it's brought to the table. This enormous wedge of cake is bigger than any dessert I have seen in my life. Made by the fine folks over at Three Brothers Bakery and costing only $5.99, the "OMG" represents a huge bang for your buck. And it's delicious! Four, maybe five, diners could split this.

Sangria mushroom demi-glaze and chipotle hollandaise? Why not add some horseradish cream to give it a bit of added balance? One of the nastiest looking plates I've seen.

Those look rare to me. Rare and delicious. I didn't know Sabine River Cafe reopened.

Kevin, thank you for the nice review. The cake is our non-dairy, Chocolate Ripple Fudge - our top selling chocolate cake. I even got the cake once at Sabine River, and even though we make it, I still said OMG! Janice

To quote Smoove B: Damn.

As you said, it does appear to be rare instead of medium rare but it still looks pretty damn good.
