On the Menu: A Good OMG at Sabine River Café

Categories: On the Menu

I recently sampled some of Sabine River Café's newest menu items at a media dinner. The restaurant is now offering seven new entrees and three desserts. Some of the additions include the Monterrey Chicken, King Ranch Chicken Casserole, Steak Laffite, and French Quarter Praline Cheesecake. I ended up trying the Steak Lafitte, Ooh La La Pasta, and a dessert I'll get to in a moment.

The Steak Lafitte ($14.99) hit the spot. Medium-rare beef medallions were soaked in a sangria mushroom demi-glaze, topped with a chipotle hollandaise, and served alongside some mashed potatoes. The dish was beautiful and well-executed. The steak needed an extra minute or two on the grill, but it was flavorful and tender. A small bite of the meat, dipped in the demi-glaze and chased with some mashed potatoes, made for a good meal. This was an excellent dish that I would not hesitate to order again.

The Ooh La La Pasta--consisting of bow tie pasta tossed with crawfish, Monterey Jack cheese, and a jalapeno sauce--missed the mark a bit. It was more like a side of macaroni and cheese. An addition of peas, for example, would have made this feel more like an entrée and look more appealing. I will say the crawfish were not overcooked and very tasty.

I just couldn't help myself with dessert. I passed on some of the newer options and went with the "OMG" Four Layer Chocolate Cake. While the pasta may not have been "ooh la la" worthy, this cake sure as hell was an "OMG." That's exactly what you'll say when it's brought to the table. This enormous wedge of cake is bigger than any dessert I have seen in my life. Made by the fine folks over at Three Brothers Bakery and costing only $5.99, the "OMG" represents a huge bang for your buck. And it's delicious! Four, maybe five, diners could split this.
