Katharine Shilcutt Nominated for a National James Beard Award

Categories: News

Houston Press food critic Katharine Shilcutt has been nominated for a James Beard Award in the Multimedia Food Feature category for "Designer Meats" and the accompanying video "Butchering 101 with Chris Shepherd."

The story describes how Houston chefs are curing and preserving their own meats, allowing us to devour salami, pepperoni and soppressata handcrafted locally. The video, above, is a lesson on breaking down a pig from a master.

It's especially sweet that Shilcutt was nominated, since she only took over as critic in June of last year.

Also nominated: former Houston Press food critic Robb Walsh, in Food Culture/Travel, for his Garden & Gun story, "The Southerner's Guide to Oysters."

Congratulations, you two.

And we're happy to report that City of Ate, the food blog for our sister publication, The Dallas Observer, is nominated in the Group Food Blog category, the Observer's Alice Laussade is nominated in the Humor category for her story "OK, Who Put Food in My Beer?" and Bryan Caswell of REEF is nominated for the Best Chef Southwest award.
