6. Boiling Crab

Back in 2009, the relatively new Boiling Crab was given our Best Crawfish award, and it's still going strong. And don't knock it just because it's a California-based chain: It was founded by Vietnamese fishermen from Seadrift, Texas, who certainly know their stuff. A pound of crawfish will run you $6.99 a pound right now, a fairly standard price throughout Chinatown.

5. Hank's Crawfish (tied with Crawfish & Noodles)

Hank's was given the coveted Best Crawfish award in last year's Best of Houston® issue. Part of the reason is that you don't just get an order of crawfish at this divey spot. Like Boiling Crab, you get to choose from a variety of different boil flavors. And although I've seen some negative reviews of Hank's in the past, it always seems those people were going during non-crawfish season. In season, Hank's holds up with the best of 'em. Crawfish are $6.99 a pound right now at both locations.

4. Concert Pub (tied with BB's Cajun Cafe, in season)

One of the last holdouts of the once vibrant Richmond Strip, Concert Pub has managed to retain its fun, spirited, casual vibe -- important things in a crawfish-eating atmosphere. The place also has one of the best deals in town right now: $4.99 a pound or five pounds for $20. Even better? Concert Pub seasons the water, not just the crawfish, so your bugs are done up the right way.

I can't recommend Floyd's. The 5 lb platter is a 3 lb platter, so you really pay about $10/lb.

Looking for a great place for crawfish that are not so hot that they burn my lips off and can taste nothing but heat.  Tasty crawfish.  I have been to many places, most are good, one place I loved closed down, Ocagiens (sp) in pearland .

Turns out Concert Pub has raised its price since this article.  It is now $5.99 a pound or $19.95 for 4 pounds.  Still a good deal though.

Best crawfish in TX/LA: Jolynn's Crawfish. Unique flavoring and spice, juicier and tastier than anything in Chinatown. Puts Boiling Crab, Hanks, and all the other poser joints to shame. Try it once and you'll be hooked, guaranteed. And you can thank me later.

I'm deeply dissapointed that the author didn't include what should be the #1 place for crawfish. Bayou City Seafood and Pasta!!! 4730 Richmond. They always deliver on the very best crawfish year after year. They started out the year with there usual happy hour 4.99 but raised it to 5.99 this year. The staff is great and service is also excellent. And the plus is pasta that is the best in town.own.

Repka's is overrated, btw, just not what it used to be. Who wants to drive out to Pattison anyways? I have found the best crawfish this season at Vida Loca in katy. There is all the End Zone sports bar out 1093 (Westheimer), past West Oaks. On Sunday they serve them and they are pretty darn good. Reasonable price too, $4 for a to go sized box. Eat until they are gone. You can bring kids but keep in mind in can get quite ghetto, so it's best to leave them with a sitter. We also like Hank's on Highway 6 and Good Ole Boys..

I usually ate crawfish in the Houston area was at Crazy Cajun on Nasa Rd 1, but it's not there anymore (I don't live down there anymore, so I don't know how long it's been gone, or if maybe it just moved). I did try some at a little stand looking joint near Ellington AFB, but they were very overcooked. And way back when, the Turtle Club would occasionally have crawfish, but I haven't been there in over a decade, so no idea if they still do, but it was decent.

I'd be really mad if I was served crawfish boiled in unseasoned water. Now that I've been being frugal for many years, I rarely eat out, so I learned to make my own crawfish boil. And it's heavily seasoned of course.

Does anyone here know of where to get New Orleans style crawfish? I am from New Orleans (moved here 5 years ago) and NONE of these places on this list do crawfish right. The idea that there is seasoning on the OUTSIDE of the crawfish is silly. In Louisiana, the seasonings are always in the water and a perfect pot needs to outside seasoning nor do they need seasoning on the table.

That being said, doe anyone here know where to get real Louisiana style crawfish in Houston?

I don't know why no one outside of New Orleans enver thought of that! Season the water? GENIUS!

Gosh, I wish we were smart and experienced enough in little ol' podunk Houston to come up with brilliant ideas like that. You New Orleanians had better find a good intellectual property lawyer to get to work on that, you never know who might steal that kind of proprietary, classified information that you guys came up with.

I'm sad to hear that in personally visiting all ten of these places as I'm sure you did, you discovered our dirty little secret.

Seasoned Water? I'm from the Chesapeake bay area of Maryland, and up there we steam crawdads, crabs, shrimp, etc. in beer and a couple tablespoons of vinegar. All critters get liberally covered with Old Bay seasoning, and by God they're tasty...I can't imagine taking good seafood and just boiling it in water...what a waste!

SirRon
SirRon

I'm starting to thing the unseasoned water comment was just a dirty accusation. Not a single EOW contributor or commenter has offered the name of a restaurant that cooks their crawfish in unseasoned water.

I'm at Jimmy Gs right now, and they confirmed (I asked) that they only season after boiling. Just water in the pot.

I don't know that Sam's Boat is among the best in Houston, but they're usually tasty. When the weather's nice, sitting on that patio eating crawfish and drinking beer by the bucket is about as good as it gets.

Calliope's has it down pat.. dunno why it's number 10 but they season it like home in new orleans and you don't have to add any seasoning on top nor will you see any additional seasoning on the crawfish. You can really suck the heads and get the flavors. not only that, they're HUGE now... sitting outside with my beer and crawdads

i dont think i've ever run across a crawfish boil where the water wasn't seasoned... is that really a frequent occurrence? i have a hard time believing that.

CL91

Not at all. But if you're from New Orleans you refuse to believe that it's even physically possible for anyone outside Orleans Parish to boil good crawfish, or make a decent poboy.

Some of the best, which I think you know, are out in Chinatown. Especially, Hong Kong market where hundreds of smart eaters gather for cheap, but incredibly seasoned crawfish are served in what's basically a food court.

The best crawfish I've had in Texas is in Crosby: Crawfish Shack (http://www.crawfishshack.com/). I know many people from Downtown who regularly make the trek out during the season. Everything else they serve is great, too, and it's BYOB.

regent032
regent032

I was going to point out the same place. I'm a transplanted midwestern guy, so my expertise on crawfish is limited to the handful of times I've ate them, but my sisters boyfriend is 100% Louisiana coonass and he swears by the Crawfishshack.

Ragin Cajun is AWFUL!!! And the last time I went they were smaller than the friggin' crackers! I asked if I could exchange the small ones and was told "you win some you lose some!"

Bayou City is the REAL DEAL, as id Mardi Gras Grill. I will have to try Calliope's, as they do have real authentic New Orleans po-boys.

I hate "seasoning on top" that's just lame, it's gets on your hands and not in the meat. Season the water, people!! Season the water!

Matt
Matt

I believe Calliope's also seasons the water (that's what the owner told me, I look forward to trying them). I'm from New Orleans and will never understand why Houstonians put up with non-seasoned water in their crawfish boils, spice in the boil is the only way to give tail meat flavor. And forget about sucking the head of any crawfish boiled in plain water (shiver).

Peghand
Peghand

Only thing I didn't like about Calliope's is that the critters were not very hot, as if they nucked some cooler-saved ones.

Seafood Shoppe is a glaring omission. Top 3 in the city IMO.

Gentian

Yeah, Seafood Shoppe was good maybe 5 years ago, back in the other location. They've given it up for free time, driving around in Luxe cars nowadays, acting all cool, but with no foundation of good food.

Fidelippo

Agree Seafood Shoppe is way past its prime, but old location, when it was a to-go hole, was a prime spot. Now there are too many Viet places in the same area for it to be anywhere close to top ten.

SirRon
SirRon

I'm confused about all this old location, past prime, etc talk. I've lived in Westchase since 1999 and the Seafood Shoppe on Westheimer near the Belt has been open and pretty consistent since. The gumbo is also some of the best in town, but it's not cheap.

SirRon
SirRon

Your comment is garbage. Don't you have some puppies to kick?

brandius

Really? Whenever Ive gone the crawfish tasted like they came out of a ditch. I don't think they even try cleaning them. Maybe I have bad luck.

SirRon
SirRon

If you hadn't have added that last sentence, I would have been convinced you had a Condo-Douche-vs-Hans-Bier-Haus-like vendetta against Seafood Shoppe. Since you did add that last sentence, I'm going to say: Your first sentence is way off, ridiculous, and you must go back. Or not. I'm just sharing opinions.

However, @imneverfull has some integrity in this eaters of food community. Seafood Shoppe is on her list: http://houston.citysearch.com/...
