The judges have spoken and some upsets have ensured that the Elite 8 in our 2011 Eating Our Words Burger Bracket will create cause for some serious burger discussion.

Team Thomas Family judged the Fast Food-Style bracket and sent in a video of their adventures, wherein they spent their entire Spring Break judging burgers for our benefit. Meanwhile, the Carnivorous Habits team sent in a highly detailed breakdown of why each burger did or did not advance to the Elite 8. A sample is below:

Lucky's Pub: We were not expecting much from Lucky's, and we thought we were being sneaky by going to visit it the day after St. Patrick's Day. The atmosphere inside doesn't help - concrete floors and big TVs and every Budweiser product you could drink is not really where any of us would choose to dine. Also, choosing Lucky's to advance would probably result in all sorts of shit being flung your way and saying we were bought off because they're hosting the final party and yadda, yadda, yadda. And yet...Lucky's makes a really tasty burger. It's a thick, juicy patty with good veggies and a properly buttered and griddled bun. The meat was seasoned well and had a good overall flavor. If it had come out medium rare as ordered and oozed a little, we might have bumped it over BWT just because it's a better representation of a "Pub Burger." Petrol-burger loving fanboys needs to check the Lucky's burger out. If I wanted food either before or after an Astros game, I'd go to Lucky's for a burger and be perfectly happy.

Team Burger Wolf Pack kept it short and sweet: "These two [winning] burgers were glorious. Juices running down to our elbows glorious. Honestly, the Samba Grille was amazing too, so that bracket was a tough match."

But which burgers advanced? Here are your Elite 8, Houston.

Stay tuned next Monday when the Final Four are announced and remember: you, our readers, will be the judges on Monday, April 4, at Lucky's Pub at the Houston Press Final Four Viewing Party.

No Guy's Meat Market? Not even in the Sweet Sixteen? Forget this!

Hooray for the Burger Guys! So glad to see them advancing, they deserve to win!

Have to say that although Petrol Station cooked a mean burger, I was more satisfied with Rudyard's. Maybe the 16 ounces of mayonnaise they slapped on my burger at Petrol was the deciding factor for me. Other than that, both were killer, but Rudyards' burger just seemed more balanced.

wow, i'm a little taken aback that there was so little explanation for each winner. i had hoped the teams that were picked would have taken this a little more seriously and put some effort into it; if for no other reason than gratitude for some free meals. kudos to the one family for putting together a video.

Word. They should provide specifics about how they determined the winners. Maybe there should have been a printed scorecard or something like that.

We'd like to see whatever comments are available. This is a blog, not a blind!

Can you provide a link to the team's reviews? I'd like to see what folks actually thought of each place and why they chose one over the other. I expected Bernie's to stay in longer.

I had my first Bernie's burger today and I was underwhelmed. I don't live far from where they were located today yet when I got the burger home the bun was soaking wet. The beef didn't seem well seasoned, and the fries were just OK. I expected better so I wasn't surprised at this result.

Not every team sent in reviews. In fact, I ran pretty much everything each team said except for Carnivorous Habits' other comments (and none of those were on Bernie's, as that wasn't their bracket). Team Pola Cheese - the team that had the Fancy Pants bracket - are the strong, silent types.

Sorry to see my dark horse Samba Grille out of the running. All the others, with the possible exception of Jonathan's over Beck's, seemed obvious.

(I'm only replying to your comment because there is something wrong with the comment system, that even after closing my browser, and refreshing a few times, I cannot post an original comment, plus it's vaguely related).

I'm glad to see Jonathan's the Rub in the Elite 8! A few years ago when I was in high school I used to order their burgers for lunch. They delivered to school and were absolutely delicious. It's such an odd location, and I'm surprised (and pleased) that they've lasted this long in it! Go Jonathan's!

Beck's is also great, don't get me wrong, though I think their steak sandwich and ridiculous shakes edge out their burgers for renown.

I fully agree, their Steak Sandwich's are amazing and delicious!

I am fine with all of these advancements except Petrol over Rudz. I love the Rudz burger dearly.
