Top 5: I-10 Eats
I continue my search for the best eateries off major highway arteries. This time around, let's check out I-10. This list includes restaurants right off I-10, between Loop 610 and Beltway 8.
5. Five Guys Burger & Fries
Save the speech, devout burger lovers. This chain is good, and given the fast service and fair prices, it's better than good. Yes, the burgers have a difficult time holding their form, but that's only because the fine people at Five Guys allow me to pile on the toppings. Control knows no boundaries when it comes to me and burger fixins'. And let us not forget about those delicious fries, sprinkled with salt and pepper.
4. Goode Company Seafood
GCS ranks No. 1 in my book for Goode establishments. I enjoy the Westpark location far more than this I-10 one, but the food at both places is excellent. Highlights on the menu include the campechana, fried shrimp po-boys, and the seafood gumbo. This gumbo is some of the best you'll find--very rich and filled with crab, rice and shrimp. I better stop.
3. 59 Diner
Robb Walsh Perry's pork chop.
Just as solid of a restaurant as you can get, 59 Diner does a lot of dishes great, most good, and none bad. I especially love the BLT and shakes. I remember one night a few years back, we ordered the cheese fries. I think they were even kind enough to dose them with chili. It's as good as it sounds.
2. Taste of Texas
Finally, a non-chain restaurant makes the list. I love Taste of Texas. Sure, there are better steaks out there, but given the reasonable price for this high quality food, it's hard to beat. The all-you-can-eat salad and bread bar doesn't hurt. I always get the small filet and am never disappointed. Taste of Texas has been around for awhile, and for good reason--very consistent.
1. Perry's Steakhouse and Grille
Perry's gets the number one spot based solely on one of my favorite dishes in all of Houston--that famous pork chop. It's more like half a pig, rather than a chop, and it's carved tableside. What the waiter sets in front of you could feed three people. It's as beautiful as it is tasty. The meat is very tender, and has this salty and sugary outer-crust. Try dipping a piece of the loin in some applesauce and let me know how that works out for you.
