Top 5: I-10 Eats

I continue my search for the best eateries off major highway arteries. This time around, let's check out I-10. This list includes restaurants right off I-10, between Loop 610 and Beltway 8.

5. Five Guys Burger & Fries
Save the speech, devout burger lovers. This chain is good, and given the fast service and fair prices, it's better than good. Yes, the burgers have a difficult time holding their form, but that's only because the fine people at Five Guys allow me to pile on the toppings. Control knows no boundaries when it comes to me and burger fixins'. And let us not forget about those delicious fries, sprinkled with salt and pepper.

4. Goode Company Seafood
GCS ranks No. 1 in my book for Goode establishments. I enjoy the Westpark location far more than this I-10 one, but the food at both places is excellent. Highlights on the menu include the campechana, fried shrimp po-boys, and the seafood gumbo. This gumbo is some of the best you'll find--very rich and filled with crab, rice and shrimp. I better stop.

Perry's pork chop.
3. 59 Diner
Just as solid of a restaurant as you can get, 59 Diner does a lot of dishes great, most good, and none bad. I especially love the BLT and shakes. I remember one night a few years back, we ordered the cheese fries. I think they were even kind enough to dose them with chili. It's as good as it sounds.

2. Taste of Texas
Finally, a non-chain restaurant makes the list. I love Taste of Texas. Sure, there are better steaks out there, but given the reasonable price for this high quality food, it's hard to beat. The all-you-can-eat salad and bread bar doesn't hurt. I always get the small filet and am never disappointed. Taste of Texas has been around for awhile, and for good reason--very consistent.

1. Perry's Steakhouse and Grille
Perry's gets the number one spot based solely on one of my favorite dishes in all of Houston--that famous pork chop. It's more like half a pig, rather than a chop, and it's carved tableside. What the waiter sets in front of you could feed three people. It's as beautiful as it is tasty. The meat is very tender, and has this salty and sugary outer-crust. Try dipping a piece of the loin in some applesauce and let me know how that works out for you.

Not a Fan of 59 Diner

Just left 59 Diner extremely disappointedThere was trash and food on the floor behind the counter-and I watched while not only the bus boys and servers but even the Manager walked over and around it!Their famous Chicken Pot pie mostly filled with yellow goo was Bland almost tasteless, The burgers they rave aboutwere pre-formed, over ground and kind of mealy Ice tea was bitter but the Shakes were good.Drive on by......Find someplace else if you can

Why you no eat vegetable? With Sweet Tomatoes, you can create your own goodness and stuff.

And btw, I happen to *like* Taste of Texas. May have to go back out there for dinner sometime soon.

Wait a minute... you missed IKEA!!

This is so Walsh! I am convinced he has no idea of what constitutes good food.

No love for Brenner's? I went to a St. Arnold's beer pairing dinner there and it was one of the best meals of my life. I have always wanted to go to Taste of Texas, but never have. You are brave to give any love of any kind to anything that might have been associated with a Republican.

Denis Seafood. Great oysters and rainbow trout.

6. Ciro's7. Pappy's8. Pappasito's (just for the chips and pork tamales)9. El Rey (I like El Rey, just don't love it, the pork is sometimes dry)10. Costco's (Love the samples and smoothies)

That Five Guys isn't as strong as some of the others in town. Fries are typically limp and undercooked.

What about Russo's? And agree with Dr Ricky on El Rey.

What a clear snub of the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital cafeteria!!1! Top 5 lists are too exclusive and subjective for my tastes...

It's a shame that you had to put 59 Diner on there cause it's just awful, especially compared to the pretty darned good place of Pappy's. Maybe if you could look past the comforting neon glow of the chain restaurants…

5 guys is nothing special, and I haven't been to the other three (although one of the worst breakfasts I EVER had was at 59 diner on Shepherd neat 59S.) But you nailed the stuff to get at Goode Co. Seafood. Split a po-boy and the campechena with a date (although I go with a shrimp and oyster combo, or "peacemaker.) Trust me.

Strike Taste of Texas, Robb Walsh's review is the definitive takedown of it. But now what to replace it with...Hmmm.

Note that there are TWO segments of "I-10, between Loop 610 and Beltway 8". You appear to be talking about the restaurants on the West part of that definition. Keeping it directly on I10 of course leaves out options in the restaurant rich Longpoint neighborhood. So, no 99 Ranch eateries, or El Rey, or Kobe (rather underrated neighborhood joint, if you ask me).

Taste of Texas? You sir, are an idiot.

Hard to argue with that. Why you no eat vegetable???

Thanks for the compliment! I'd love to hear your top five list.

Technicality: Brenner's is outside Beltway 8.

Why would you go to five guys in that section of I-10, when you can go to Chritian's just inside the loop? I realize that's not between I-10 and Beltway 8, but close enough for a much better burger. I also used to like that Charlie's Hamburgers off I-10 and bunker hill, is that place even there anymore?

Don, El Ray did open a location on the north side of I-10 just before Memorial City. It beats going downtown to get my fix.

Thanks, Doc Ricky, for pointing out there are indeed two sections of I-10 between 610 and the Beltway. It's not just that East Side gets no love, it's like we don't even exist. Pssst! Houston extends east beyond the Budweiser plant and the Fifth Ward, pass it on!

I attended a beer dinner there a few months ago and the food was fantastic. I really was blown away by everything. A great family run place and they help their servers with college tuition too. I'm glad to see them get some props, Kevin.

Indeed. Reasonable prices? More like "Outback Steakhouse" quality and ambience for "Flemings" prices. The place is like an anti-Whole Foods... instead of liberal vegans feeling self righteous, it's the Jesus-and-GOP crowd.

No disrespect towards restaurants in that area of town. I owe it to the readers to put together a list of restaurants I can truly comment on, from an area I've frequently dined in. I am not yet overly familiar with that area of town from a culinary standpoint. Please recommend any restaurants and I'm all ears. Now that Doc Ricky has informed me of the other segment of I-10 :), I'll be able to make my way in that direction.

And I assume you land right in the middle of the two LVs and JAG crowd in SELF HATING DORK TERRITORY.

Mike N.
Mike N.

Dork I'll readily admit. That was my impression when I ate there (and I've eaten a lot of Outback when I traveled for business and was faced with nothing but my choice of quality national chains to eat at). Mediocre steaks at relatively high prices, with a distinct JAG, as you say, vibe. There's even an alternative on the list, right down the road -- Perry's is way better for the same $.

What about you, Mr. Anonymous Craig, from what side of the aisle are you shaking your fist?
