Super Bowl Cuisine: The "Roethlisburger"

For the Steelers fan looking to serve themed fare this Superbowl Sunday, I suggest skipping the wings and pizza. Instead, take a cue from sandwich shop Peppi's and construct your own "Roethlisburger" in honor of Pittsburgh's famed (okay, notorious) quarterback.

When Big Ben first started for the Steelers, Peppi's offered their congratulations to him in the form of his very own namesake sandwich, the "Roethlisburger." Served on a 12-inch white hoagie roll, the Roethlisburger (not actually a burger) consists of 12 to 16 ounces of beef and sausage covered in several slices of cheddar cheese, 4 to 5 fried eggs, onions, peppers, and, if you're really hungry, some mayonnaise. This protein-packed sub certainly satisfies the daily amino acid requirements for a six-foot five-inch, 250-pound male and is likely to give the rest of us a severe case of gout.

If you don't happen to be within Peppi's takeout radius, I suggest you make your own Roethlisburgers at home using one of many online recipes. And for those of you lucky enough to have tickets to the Big Game, for God's sake don't depend on the denizens of Dallas to offer this Steel City sandwich. Sneak that sandwich into the stadium and munch it Homer Simpson-style as you cheer the Steelers to victory.
