Off the Wall: CRAVE-ing Coffee

Last week, Katharine Shilcutt ranked the top 10 coffee shops in town. Suggestions and opinions varied in the comments section, but one in particular caught my eye. Coffee Bean Junkie wrote, "I would also add Crave Cupcakes. I go there often just for the pour-over-style, rich-tasting coffee they serve. Haven't had a bad cup there yet."

Let's see if Coffee Bean Junkie was right.

Actually a trip to CRAVE had me excited on two fronts. One, I had never been, and you know I wasn't about to only get a cup of coffee. Two, any excuse to get a cup of java is a good excuse. I drink lots of coffee each day, and am always in search of the next great one.

I went with a regular cup of the Premium Roast (described as a bold Ethiopian Harrar) and a vanilla cupcake with chocolate icing. The $2.00 cup of coffee was brewed to order. I appreciated this nice touch. Better yet, Coffee Bean Junkie's assessment proved to be correct. This was some tasty coffee. It was bold, but smooth, and lacked that harsh aftertaste associated with some larger chains. I deemed the coffee a winner.

The fairly dense cupcake -- not so much. The cake part, as well as the icing, just didn't do much for me. It wasn't a bad cupcake, but it certainly didn't make me sigh with contentment. The icing was just too sweet for my liking. Next time, I'll stick with the coffee and might go for a dark chocolate cupcake. We'll see how round two goes.

It is important to note that CRAVE was bustling with a steady flow of customers on my visit. The service was fast, friendly, and very attentive.

...also Sugarland cupcakes had the best Red Velvet, Strawberry Lemonade, and Turtle cupcakes I have ever had but I hear they are closed. :-(

Crave sucks. Sprinkles is much better. Same type of cupcakes without needing a gallon of milk with each bite.

Crave does a great chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting. That's it. I don't love their vanilla cake at all.

Now, Celebrity? I dream of eating their cupcakes in my sleep. They use only organic ingredients and are really different from all of the other gourmet cupcake places around here. Their vanilla is my favorite. The icing isn't super sweet, even with a dusting of glittery pink sugar on top. It's creamy and milky and so incredibly yum. The cake has a strong vanilla flavor and the texture is almost cornbready- but moist. Just so good and different. I don't love their milk chocolate icing, but I hear the dark chocolate is insane. And the chocolate flourless cupcake is supposed to be ridiculous. I've never tried any because I always just want that yummy vanilla.

Sorry to reverse course, but after further review, I'm going to hold off on doing a battle cupcake. There are a few other food items I'd like to cover before I delve into little cakes.

Someone needs to do a cupcake war with Treat! off of 249 vs. Sprinkles. On second thought, I'll do my own in my belly.

I recently went to Crave for the first time and was also underwhelmed by my red velvet cupcake. The icing was good, but the cupcake was merely OK. Maybe Eating Our Words needs to to a battle cupcake.

Thanks for the link. I'll have to try Dessert Gallery. I've had cookies from there, but have never tried their cupcakes.

There's been a Food Fight Cupcake done before: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/...

But who's to say we can't do another? I'll pick Sprinkles (never been before). Knitting Reader, please pick the competitor and I'll make it my next Food Fight write-up. And please pick somewhere other than Crave (just want to try something different).

The best red velvet cake that I ever had was from Frosted Betty.
