An example of home winemaking supplies.
Take a late lunch tomorrow, if you can. And maybe bring along a designated driver. Archway Gallery (2305 Dunlavy, 713-522-2409) is hosting an afternoon of free wine in its Montrose space, and this isn't your typical gallery showing.

From 2 to 4 p.m. tomorrow, Archway will be debuting a new Pinot Grigio that artist Tom Irven made himself, at home. Although not as discussed as homebrewing, home winemaking is also a popular do-it-yourself pastime. Homebrewer headquarters DeFalco's even sells winemaking supplies and recipes.

Irven's wine is used at gallery openings for the artists who display their work at Archway. And according to the Examiner's Mike Ricetti, in an interesting twist, he uses artwork from past installations on the wine bottles' labels.

And if tomorrow afternoon's wine sampling piques your interest, check out this guide to home winemaking from Texas' own Jack Keller. Maybe we'll be attending one of your wine sampling sessions a year from now...
