Wine of the Week: Octavin Home Wine Bar - Seven

Categories: Wine Time

Other than sharing its name with a movie that has one of the most disturbing endings in cinema history, this three-liter (equal to four regular bottles of wine) octagonal container contains - you guessed it, seven varietals. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, Grenache and Graciano is like a melting pot of Spanish grapes with no real conviction.

Unassuming berry and soft, silky tannins are the focus, an attempt to please the masses. This self-proclaimed "home wine bar," which is marketing-speak for "non-traditional packaging," is convenient, but the wine inside is pretty boring. I'd rather trade the convenience for a little more personality.

While soft and silky may be three liters worth of fun for a larger, less frequent red-wine-drinking crowd (perhaps for a change at your Super Bowl party?), I'm not planning on sipping the whole container. One bottle of the stuff would have been great as a midweek, come-home-and-relax-on-the-couch-by-the-fire kinda wine, but four is a bit too much to drink it all by itself with no one to help me out.

Taking advantage of our recent cold-weather snap, I plan on turning the remaining 2.75 liters of this large sample into a batch of Glögg, a spiced, mulled, Scandinavian drink, and opening up something with a little more oomph for solo sipping.

Looks like I've got another contender for a good game of slap the bag...

a screening of The Human Centipede will cure of you those willies over Seven

Why yes, after reading several Urban Dictionary definitions of that, I would have to agree. Although, you may be asking for a mega-headache the next day (of course, that could be the case with a few of the more explicit definitions for the term I found as well).

And then watch A Serbian Film to shake the willies over Human Centipede. I feel scarred for life after reading the description of Serbian Film on Wikipedia. I do not plan on watching either movie. I have limits.

I'm intrigued, and frightened. Perhaps it will help me get through the rest of the wine?

Why didn't I listen when you said that reading the description alone of "A Serbian Film" would scar one for life?! WHY?
