Grilled Mac & Cheese Sandwich at Ziggy's

For a restaurant known for its healthy dining options, Ziggy's Bar & Grill has an impressive edge when it comes to junk food of the highest order. To wit: The grilled mac & cheese sandwich seen above.

The story of the grilled mac & cheese sandwich -- a special, limited-time creation inspired by Eating Our Words -- is simple. When our commenters and Twitter followers began oohing and ahhing over the mac & cheese burger Chef Jason Kerr is serving at his food truck, Zilla Eats, I looked upon that creation with just as much longing as anyone else. But my longing for mac & cheese between bread took a different path.

I wished for a grilled cheese sandwich with mac & cheese in the middle.

It also goes great with a cup of buffalo chili.
And earlier this week, after an extremely disappointing visit to the sad little salad bar at the downtown YMCA for lunch, I saw that Ziggy's had answered my prayers. A Twitter update on January 17 simply read, "For our Twitter friends. Available at either location, just ask for it. Good with soup." And attached to that Tweet, a picture of a grilled mac & cheese sandwich.

I threw away my disgusting salad and headed to Ziggy's location on Fairview and Taft immediately. Fifteen minutes (and a slightly confused waiter) later, I was holding the sandwich I craved. Fat curls of cavatappi coated in cheese between two slices of crisped wheat bread, which held up admirably to all the creamy pasta within.

The only thing I wished for as I polished it off was that it was a true grilled cheese sandwich with macaroni and cheese in the middle. At Ziggy's the sandwich was simply mac & cheese between two pieces of toasted bread.

But you can't have it all, right? And just the sheer fact that there's a grilled mac & cheese sandwich out there in the world now is enough for me.

I hate to tell you but there is a resturant in Cincinnati that did this a while ago, only they put the mac n cheese on a burger. Its intense.

Dunno if it's the photographer's fault (doubt it) but that looks like unappetizing mac and cheese scooped cold onto untoasted wheat bread. There's no grilled about it.

And then the one tweeted by the restaurant looks like cold mac and cheese scooped onto cold untoasted white bread, that someone dropped some cigarette ashes on. Totally burned in the middle, not even slightly toasted at the back.... seriously, what the fuck happened here?

I would rather have a half grilled cheese sandwich, half order of homemade mac n cheese and small bowl of chili, personally. Toss in an easy small refreshing salad (yogurt ranch or olive oil vinaigrette dressing) and the perfect meal has been served.

A single slice of thick cut but crispy cooked bacon on the side. Fresh brewed Iced tea or Stone IPA to drink.

NOM. All it needs is a thick slice of cheese to "hold it all together", and yes, no beans in the chili. Add a little masa to thicken the chili up instead and make sure it's super hot, but not too spicy. I wanna make that this weekend.

"Add bacon." Nice try with the upsale hombre. How about a Y side salad for just $3 more? Oh, I'm sorry sir, we're out of Tabasco today. Enjoy your ill-conceived trendwich.

Had this the other day. It was pretty damn disappointing.

Bummer! I'm sorry to hear that. What happened?

It was just mac and cheese on slightly warmed wheat bread. And it took more than 30 minutes to prepare (for a to go order) during a fairly slow period at the restaurant.

Are you really giving up on the genuine article that quickly? Surely, someone in this fair city will step up to the plate, and make a real grilled mac and cheese sandwich. Or, you could always do this:http://www.waffleizer.com/waff...

For the love of God, can we all just shut up about the beans in chili thing from now on?

We can drop the beans-in-chili discussion once everyone agrees to make chili the proper way. Recall that chili con carne is Mexican for chili with carny (a carny being a carnival worker). Back in the day they ground up carnival workers because they didn't have beans. That's why there are no beans in authentic Texican chili. Nowadays they use mechanically separated beef instead of carny.

Not sure I could even call that toasted, definitely not grilled.

Totally agree. There's nothing 'crispy' about that bread.Like much of the stuff at Ziggy's: decent idea, poorly executed.

Katharine, that chili has beans in it. If I recall correctly, some frequent posters frown upon that.

@Bruce

The picture caption clearly states that it is BUFFALO chili, so beans are OK.

Oh god... double the carbs.
