Cheap Oysters, Cold Beer and a Boat

Like many other Houstonians, I love a good oyster. Most of the time I prefer them cold, slimy, raw - topped with a bit of cocktail sauce and a squeeze of lemon - slurped directly from the shell. Luckily for me, Houston is a prime place to go oyster slurping, in price and availability.

With much ado about the East Coast oysters selling like hotcakes for $1 at The Oceanaire recently, I decided to head to a place in town that had them at half the price - Capt. Benny's, which sells Gulf oysters for $5.99 a dozen, and only $4.99 between 2 and 6 p.m.

If you're looking for more value for your hard-earned dollar, hit up the unassuming boat of a restaurant. While you're there, you might as well throw back a few micheladas to wash those inexpensive oysters down.

There's Nothing in Seafood better than eating raw oysters on the halfshell(Monument Inn Resturant,4406 Battleground Rd, La Porte, Texas 77571) and a few icy cold Michelob Lights.

For those of you who don't know, the author of this article was referring to this book in her title: Sex, Death and Oysters: A Half-Shell Lover's World Tour by Robb Walsh.

It's a good read

I've eaten at both places and prefer Capt Benny's over Capt Tom's. Benny's IS and has always been the oyster king in Houston. Now I've made myself hungry. I know where I'm going for lunch today.

Their Micheladas are quite tasty as well.

Great with a '79 Prosecco!

Capt Tom's is supposed to be great for oysters and deep fried whole flounder...anyone know of it?

Captain Benny's also has some of the best fried shrimp you'll find in Houston. Order 'em seasoned; they'll bread and fry them to order, and they are delicious.

Lennie - perhaps if you read the entire post (which is short enough for even your attention span), you could answer your own question. As for you Foreplay...I have no comment.

That's it? No overly descriptive, contrived rambling of how luciously briny and delicately slipperily they slid down your everly eager throat? Eating oysters is like eating box which, despite my moniker, is something I also like doing. After a shower.

Are these Gulf oysters? That information would have been nice.

Capt. Tom's is okay for fried oysters the one time I went, but they don't have raw oysters in the off season like Benny's does year-round. Capt. Benny's will also throw in an oyster or 2 to their dozens...it's happened to me countless times, but not always.

In summary: Benny's for life.

We go to Capt. Tom’s all the time. Yes, oysters are huge and very reasonable priced $5 a dozen (I don’t know the exact price, but cheapest I’ve found). And don’t be surprised when you order a dozen, you don’t necessarily always get a dozen…you may get a few extra. The gumbo is awesome. Only problem, not a lot of room in there so if you go during prime hours expect to wait outside.

Captain Tom's is awesome. Cheap raw oysters ($5 or $6 a dozen), good gumbo, tasty fried seafood, enjoyably spicy micheladas. You can feast there for $20.

Wow "give it a rest" you seem so perturbed about a reply to a restaurant post. Really? Nothing bigger than this you could sink your meanness into? He asked a question, if you didn't think it met your lofty expectations than ignore it. Get over yourself, life is short.

OK, so it says "gulf oysters" in the post, but what gulf are we talking about here. Of Mexico? Persian? Of Tonkin?

Simone - I actually have to come to "Give it a rest"'s defense... I am her husband and I wrote that question to be a jerk. I was expecting a reply like that.

Oh, hell. I just realized that Amber wrote this. (hanging my head in shame.) I was trying to protect her husband cuz she posted this on fb and I hit the link and there it was. ha! Understood. But the important thing is that I'm gonna go get some oysters, how bout that?
